A Tribute: Chadwick Boseman Tragically Dies at 43 from Cancer

“Wakanda forever”

Announced just now, one of the best actors of the decade, Chadwick Boseman, the star of Black Panther, tragically died at 43 from colon cancer.

A tweet from his official account reads a heartfelt message. “It is with immeasurable grief that we confirm the passing of Chadwick Boseman. It was the honor of his life to bring King T’Challa to life in Black Panther.” Below, you can click to see the statement.

Boseman was an incredible actor. His breakout role was in 42, released in 2013 as he portrayed Jackie Robinson gracefully. His first impact was excellent, and he became a big name in Hollywood, and to us audiences after the critically acclaimed biopic. Boseman then portrayed another important figure in American history, James Brown, the legendary artist that was brought to life by the actor in 2014 with Get On Up, which received certain acclaim as well, especially for his lead performance as the title character.

We couldn’t get enough of this immensely talented actor. In 2017, he played Thurgood Marshall, the first African-American supreme court justice. Critics and audiences together hailed his performance and the film itself, as it stands with an 80% “Certified Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes, along with an 84% audience score. He then shook the world as arguably the best superhero in the MCU, and perhaps all-time.

T’Challa in Black Panther. We saw him in action with Captain America: Civil War in 2016 and realized Boseman’s levels of badassery as the beloved comics character. But it wasn’t till 2018 in his first standalone movie that we witnessed greatness. With a near-perfect 97% critics score on RT, and a number one rank on my MCU list, his performance was absolutely legendary, and so was the movie. The film had gorgeous action sequences, a deep, emotionally-layered story, and best of all, Boseman gave it his all. His acting certainly payed off, as the flick went on to gross over 1.3 billion dollars worldwide, an epic amount. Most recently, he starred in Spike Lee’s compelling anti-war joint Da Five Bloods, which you can stream on Netflix currently.

In terms of cause of death, it was announced that Boseman’s had a four-year fight with colon cancer, and he finally died of it earlier today, in his home. His cancer recently progressed to stage IV, and despite being a real fighter, succumbed to the disease.

Celebrities on social media also took out to express their shock in the matter. Jordan Peele, director of Get Out, tweeted “This is a crushing blow.” HBO’s Insecure star Issa Rae stated: “This broke me.” Even Democratic presidential nominee, and former vice president Joe Biden expressed his grief, tweeting “The true power of Chadwick Boseman was bigger than anything we saw on screen. From the Black Panther to Jackie Robinson, he inspired generations and showed them they can be anything they want — even superheroes. Jill and I are praying for his loved ones at this difficult time.”

These three were just some of the many celebs that showed their support to his loved ones and family as well as expressing their grief. While Chadwick won’t be with us anymore, and we will never see the much-anticipated Black Panther II (was scheduled to film March 2021), his legacy will go on forever.

I will never forget watching an all-Black cast kick ass in the cinema with my family. Especially T’Challa.

As his most famous character, and superhero says: “Wakanda forever.”

RIP.

"Resident Evil" Live-Action Series in the Works at Netflix

andrew dabb will oversee a “resident evil” series at netflix

resident-evil-afterlife-movie-image-milla-jovovich-21.0.0-1024x683.jpg

As more and more video games are getting adapted into live-action works, add Resident Evil to the list, which is officially in the works at Netflix as a series from the showrunner of Supernatural.

Following months of development and a frantic search for a showrunner, Netflix has given the adaptation a go, recently ordering eight episodes for the first season. According to a tweeted photo, Andrew Dabb is now confirmed to oversee and write the series. Dabb is expected to give his full attention to the Resident Evil show after he wraps up the final season of The CW’s Supernatural, which just resumed production after being delayed.

Resident Evil is my favorite game of all-time,” Dabb said. “I’m incredibly excited to tell a new chapter in this amazing story and bring the first-ever Resident Evil series to Netflix members around the world. For every Resident Evil fan, including those joining us for the first time, the series will be complete with a lot of old friends, and some things (bloodthirsty, insane things) that people have never seen before.”

Considering the original is his favorite of all-time, I feel that this is the correct choice. While video-game adaptations in the past have never been all-too good, there’s some hidden gems. The 2018 Tomb Raider was suitably gritty, grounded, and had a compelling star…and most recently, Netflix’s The Witcher series was solid fantasy fun with great production values. So far, at least, I trust that this adaptation will be successful despite the odds against it.

As mentioned, Dabb will be the showrunner and writer of the first season, and he will be joined by Constantin Film’s Robert Kulzer, Oliver Berben and Mary Leah Sutton. Brownen Hughes will serve as executive producer and director of the first two episodes.

Reportedly, the Netflix series will tell the story across two different timelines. In one, 14-year old sisters Jade and Billie Wesker are moved to New Raccoon City. The more time they spend there, they realize that the town is more than it seems, and that their father could be concealing dark secrets. Secrets that could destroy the world. The second heads more than 10 years in the future when there is only 15 million people left on Earth…And more than six billion monsters, people and animals infected by the T-virus. A 30-year old Jade struggles to survive in this new world, while the secrets from her past continue to haunt her.

One thing’s for sure: Netflix won’t have any issues with popularity. Since the launch of the game franchise in 1996, the series has sold over 100 million copies worldwide. After about 25 years since its first release, Sony has made a six-film franchise, which despite poor reception, has been successful in the box office, grossing a total of over 1.2 billion dollars worldwide.

Resident Evil is one of the many video-games that are getting adapted into shows. Halo is in the works at Showtime, Fallout at Amazon Prime Video, Netflix’s The Witcher now has two spin-offs and a second season in development, and The Last of Us is making progress at HBO. No release date has been provided.

We're Finally Getting a Teaser Trailer for "Dune"

head to the theaters, or wait a couple weeks…the “dune” trailer is coming

EWKA_Dune-Timothee_Chalamet-Rebecca-Ferguson.jpg

By: Keaton Marcus

After months and months of waiting since the first images came out, it looks like we’re getting a teaser trailer for Denis Villeneuve’s Dune very soon. But if you want early access to it, you have to see a certain Christopher Nolan movie in the theaters.

According to Trailer-Track, this long-awaited and anticipated preview clocks at about 1 minute 37 seconds. That isn’t too short, unless you compare it to the 2 minutes 30 seconds of footage we got for The Batman at just 25% film completion. It’s already been shown at Canadian showings of Christopher Nolan’s Tenet, and for the US it will be on August 31st.

If you’re not comfortable enough with heading to the theaters, you will have to wait another couple weeks till September 9th to see it online. However, chances are it could be leaked before that date. But it won’t be the same teaser…it’s been reportedly confirmed that a full-length trailer will be the one dropping online. If you want to catch both, though, purchase your tickets!

FIRST IMAGES FOR DUNE (2020):

With four months remaining until the movie releases, it is a little surprising that we are only getting a trailer now, but director Denis Villeneuve (Sicario, Blade Runner 2049) explained that the pandemic “crushed” his schedule. He even admitted that he had to rush to finish the film on time. But better late than ever.

If readers want any more confirmation, Timothee Chalamet himself, who plays Paul Atreides in the movie, revealed the date on Twitter. He replied to @evak90s tweet, which read: “Timmy it’s my brithday today…give me content about Dune pls I’m the biggest fan.” Chalamet’s response said “trailer before sept.” Here’s the thread:

For the time being, Dune will be released in theaters December 18th as long as it isn’t delayed once again due to the pandemic.

Critics Are Furious At Disney, Refusing to Review "The New Mutants"

disney won’t give critics socially distanced press screenings, so publications are boycotting “TNM”

resized_150246-platform0410-rgb_22-29195_t800.jpg

By: Keaton Marcus

Even if Disney and Fox’s The New Mutants is finally opening in some theaters this weekend, the supposedly cursed movie still has an issue. Disney isn’t letting critics having their normal early access press screenings, meaning we won’t be getting a steady stream of reviews for a little while, with only three at the time being.

Why? The Coronavirus pandemic is, unfortunately, still raging predominately in the US, and critics aren’t taking any chances of heading to the theater with the general public. Publications such as The A.V. Club, Roger Ebert, The Boston Globe and more are refusing to see the film because Disney did not offer screening links or socially distanced press screenings. The studio is giving critics the normal option, head to the theaters with the public, a truly perilous road for these high-class avid film watchers.

I respect their decision completely. With millions of cases in the States, it may not be safe to return to theaters so soon, although cinemas are also strictly social distanced at the moment. To be very honest, there’s not much of a difference between a press screening or just a normal showtime in the dumpster fire that is 2020. Both would be socially distanced, all guests are required to wear masks, and the companies only host half or less capacity. Also, audiences aren’t having a problem with seeing Tenet, so it’s all a bit confusing with The New Mutants.

The A.V. Club’s critic A.A. Dowd published an essay on the morning of August 25. He wrote: “Science experts did not mince words: There’s a very good chance that you could get sick. And that’s a risk The A.V. Club will not be taking to review a movie, any movie.” While that is a fair point, Disney wasn’t the one who decided to re-open theaters in the States, blame that part on the idiot sitting in the White House right now. However, Disney did decide not to allow critics to have their usual screening, which is totally on them.

“We are, in fact, adopting the official policy of only reviewing films our writers can safely watch, whether in a socially distanced press screening or with a digital screener. And yes, that applies to all our writers, even those willing to take the risk for an assignment, because we’re not willing to monetize that risk, either,” Dowd adds.

The A.V. Club wasn’t the only newspaper that came out. Roger Ebert’s Brian Tallerico tweeted: “We will review theatrical releases when presented with a safe way to do so - screener or socially distanced screening - but that’s not an option in this case,” responding to a tweet by Dowd. Those are some very similar words, and unless Disney prioritizes the critics’ safety, the film’s Rotten Tomatoes page will be mostly empty.

It’s strange that Disney is being so stubborn with their new release. Recently, they decided to put Mulan on their popular streaming service for 30 dollars. However, taking a look at the price kinda suggests the same thing, their desire for cash. Their live-action reboot costs 200 million, The New Mutants stands at 100M…meaning both need a whole lot of money to break even. Additionally, while Disney did actually release something on streaming, they only did it by smacking a premium price on the thing.

You can argue that film critics are being a little wimpy at the moment, refusing to go see a movie that plenty of audiences will flock to watch. But Disney isn’t all innocent, as I’ve proven. Just last week, Warner Bros. did allow critics to attend socially distanced press screenings for Christopher Nolan’s Tenet, and a slew of positive reviews dropped on the internet.

One thing people cannot say is that film critics are dodging their job. Yes, it is the duty of these people to head out to review a movie at the cinema, but such a thing isn’t really worth risking your life for. Saving lives of sick citizens is, writing an article isn’t. At the moment, it seems that Disney is really worried that TNM will receive scathing reviews, which could lead to complete box office failure. And publications are concerned for their employees’ safety. Who is the real bad guy here?

The New Mutants opens in select theaters August 27th, and will release worldwide on the 28th. Are you watching?

US Theaters are Re-Opening with Some Big Films

as “the new mutants” and “tenet” debut in theaters, where does film business stand?

john-david-washington-in-the-2020-film-tenet.jpg

By: Keaton Marcus

Movie theaters in the US are finally beginning to re-open, but with COVID-19 cases still surging, can the debuting films do any real business? Not really, though the box office doesn’t actually look terrible considering the situation.

After the many films we got on streaming services, whether it was Netflix originals or theatrical releases on Prime Video Cinema, going back to the theater is slowly becoming a national pastime once again. Albeit, with masks and very limited capacity. Nevertheless, AMC has opened several of their theaters, taking in 40% or less capacity, and limiting the concession stands to $5 popcorn, $5 fountain drinks, $4 candy and $4 water bottles.

Safety measures for the biggest theater chain in America are of normal standards. requiring employees and guests to wear masks, and stay six feet apart when possible. Otherwise, Showplace opened to about 50% capacity, and played classics over the weekend until new releases such as Unhinged and Tenet arrive. Masks, of course, may be removed to eat or drink.

So what to make of all this. It’s certainly not the greatest idea to race back to the theaters after such a pandemic, although film addicts do deserve it after waiting around half-a-year just to return to their favorite place in the world. AMC even gave audiences a huge deal on their opening day, August 20. They reduced ticket prices to just 15 cents!

AMC also announced that 200 of their theaters should be open before Christopher Nolan’s anticipated Tenet hits the block, which has already received largely positive reviews from critics who got early access. A couple other blockbusters opened in these troubled times too, and not on streaming platforms. What films am I talking about?

Well, last weekend, animated sequel The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run debuted in 300 theaters with over 865,000 dollars, making for a per-screen average of just $2,886. Normally, that type of PSA would be terrible, but considering the conditions, it isn’t bad at all, even if the 60M cost will prevent it from being a hit. Following the colorful kids adventure was Russell Crowe’s new road-rage thriller, which opened to mixed reception from critics, and about 601,000 dollars in 299 theaters, accompanied by a PSA of $2,010.

maxresdefault.jpg

This weekend, Unhinged expanded its fronts to 1,823 locations, the widest release since the pandemic hit. For the three-day, it earned over four million dollars for a PSA of about $2,194. It was already a brave choice to release this thing in theaters, and I respect that decision. Unfortunately, it won’t give Solstice Studios any profit with that 33 million dollar budget.

Think that cost is expensive? Look at the Wikipedia page for Tenet, which reportedly carries a production budget of 200-225 million dollars, the most expensive movie of 2020. Considering that, I’d have to estimate the gross to break even to be about 600M+ worldwide, which just doesn’t seem possible right now. If you can believe it, The New Mutants is also opening in some theaters on the 27th. Yep, the film that was supposedly “cursed” is debuting in a couple days amidst the pandemic.

Despite having a 100 million budget, I still think enough people will go see The New Mutants if the reviews are positive. X-Men and superhero fans have been waiting years for this thing to arrive in cinemas, and with such a cool concept and talented cast, it has become one of the most anticipated projects in the decade. Hey, it could also completely bomb…it just depends on the general public’s willingness to exit the comfort of their homes.

Obviously Tenet and The New Mutants won’t break even immediately. Their budgets require a lot of money to render the films hits. But after a while, when more and more cinemas start to re-open, in the US and internationally, they will slowly but surely gain popularity. That’s the studios’ hope, at least…if that means anything. Disney didn’t get the memo on that one, and instead shoved Mulan onto Disney+ for 30 dollars, which could be a smart decision…I just can’t imagine a large audience paying that kind of money to stare at a screen for two hours.

I will definitely do an article on both of these film’s box office numbers for the weekend. Until then, head to the theaters, or sit and watch some Netflix, your choice.

The Duffer Brothers Confirm "Stranger Things 4" Won't Be the Last

good news, “stranger things” fans, you won’t see the end for a while

Stranger-Things-Season-3.jpg

By: Keaton Marcus

Recently, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, The Duffer Brothers have concluded that the upcoming season four of Stranger Things will not be its last. Considering season three’s popularity, fans don’t seem to want it to end either.

In the interview, Matt and Ross Duffer opened up about their season four plans, and beyond…including when they will wrap this thing up. They can confirm that we won’t see the finale for a little while, with Eleven and her friends showing up for a possible couple more seasons.

“Season four won’t be the end. We know what the end is, and we know when it is,” Ross said. “The pandemic has given us time to look ahead, figure out what is best for the show. Starting to fill that out gave us a better idea of how long we need to tell that story.”

The brothers do seem to have the entire future of the series planned out, and a tweet from the official account of Stranger Things Writers says “Stranger Things 4: the complete season #ST4.” But one thing’s for sure, this series is not invincible to fatigue, and sooner or later the fanbase will want a satisfying end.

Season one of Stranger Things was absolutely excellent, scary, nostalgic, colorful and featuring a fine set of child performances. Season two was far weaker…it still had terrific acting and signature humor, but it felt like a rehash of the first one. The most recent season was stopped from reaching the heights of the first due to the familiarity, though it still provided solid summer entertainment.

“We’ve had a lot more time to work on the scripts. For the first time, we have all the scripts written and we’re able to look at it as a whole piece and make adjustments,” Matt explained, as Ross confirmed that “everybody’s excited to get back to work” once it’s safe to return.

In my opinion, ending it at season four would be too rushed, so the brothers made a good call on that one. I also don’t want this to run for 10 seasons…the quality and originality that once fueled this show would be completely gone. While the series is still going strong, commercially and critically, the overstuffed cast and lack of new ideas has been taking a toll on the Netflix phenomenon.

In terms of release, production for Stranger Things 4 was suspended in March when Netflix said they would be pausing filming on all of their TV shows and movies in the US and Canada to reduce the spread of COVID-19. The release date is still unknown.

"Wonder Woman 1984" Star Gives Major Praise to Kristen Wiig's Cheetah

gal gadot describes cheetah as
”my favorite villain”

Screen-Shot-2019-06-05-at-3.29.00-PM-e1578582106829.png

Cheetah, one of Wonder Woman’s most iconic foes, is finally coming to the big screen with Wonder Woman 1984, the upcoming sequel to the smash hit 2017 superhero flick. Star Gal Gadot has described her as “my favorite villain” recently.

In the new movie, the villain is played by Kristen Wiig, known best for comedies like Bridesmaids, and the particularly raunchy adult animated movie Sausage Party. We’ve seen her in two trailers, and we got a first suit look, which does, sadly, bring back memories of 2019’s CATS.

Still, Wiig is a terrific and charismatic actress, so she has a solid chance of saving this role from disaster. And since Cheetah just got some major praise from Diana herself, we are all getting excited for this highly anticipated follow-up.

Supposedly WW 1984 is taking many Cheetah comics storylines and meshing them together for one that’s uniquely suited for the movie. In the earlier section of the film, Wiig’s villain will still be the human Barbara Ann Minerva, an iteration that was first introduced in 1987’s Wonder Woman #7.

“I think they’re both lonely, and Diana sees Barbara’s insecurity and it touches her. And also Diana kind of sees things that she misses in her life in Barbara—her humor—her light…Diana really makes her feel good when she’s next to her,” Gadot explained at on the set of Wonder Woman 1984 in August 2018.

However, Maxwell Lord’s (the villain) seductive promise to Barbara makes her become the next antagonist in the DC Universe. Gadot teases a seriously great performance from Wiig as Cheetah “turns 180 degrees—and she’s incredible.” These quotes from the rising superstar promise that Wiig creates a likable character with a menacing turn.

Gadot further praised her performance, saying that “working with Kristen Wiig was such an amazing experience. She’s funny and she’s sensitive…it’s a villain that you love. You understand where she’s coming from. She plays her in such an interesting, charming way.”

During a Q&A with Entertainment Weekly, Kristen Wiig herself said “I’ve never really played someone who walks into the room and owns it—especially when she starts out so insecure and self-deprecating. We didn’t want to see Barbara in Cheetah, and I didn’t want to see Kristen in Cheetah, either.”

Recently, a short teaser for WW 1984 was dropped that focused on Barbara’s transformation. “I don’t want to be like anyone. I want to be an apex predator.” This is expected to be a snippet of a full trailer WB will likely drop during the Wonder Woman 1984 panel for DC FanDome on August 22.

Otherwise, the film is expected to be released in theaters on October 2, 2020 after being pushed back from earlier this month due to the pandemic.

Disney's "Tron 3" Just Took a Big Step Forward, Finds Director and Star

“tron 3” doesn’t have the greenlight, but it just got some big news

ed66bd64edcfff609fb2dff6494b1ae7d0562bf1.jpg

By: Keaton Marcus

We never thought this dream would come true, but Disney is actually taking steps forward with Tron 3, which has just found its star and director.

So who’s headlining this thing? Well this time the sequel has chosen Jared Leto to take an adventure in the Grid instead of Tron Legacy’s Garret Hedlund. Leto has also found another leading role in Marvel’s Morbius, so it seems like despite his failed Joker, Hollywood is warming up to him a little bit.

The director of Tron 3 is now confirmed to be Garth Davis, who’s helmed Lion starring Dev Patel, and later Mary Magdalene, albeit with less success. This will be Davis’ first big blockbuster, and he will be replacing Joseph Kosinski, who’s likely been working on Top Gun: Maverick at the moment.

Tron would mark Davis’ first tentpole, and though he is not known for big-budget projects, insiders say that Davis aggressively pursued the job, eventually winning over execs,” Deadline reports.

Deadline also explained that Tron 3 was officially in the works at Disney, but it hasn’t actually been given the greenlight by the studio, so there’s technically no real evidence that this film will ever see the light of day. I consider this decision smart, especially since the fanbase isn’t that huge.

What do I mean? Aren’t the box office returns for the franchise stellar? Nope, not at all, this risky venture that Disney may be taking is fueled by the commercially mediocre Legacy, which grossed a so-so 400.1 million dollars on a budget of 170 million, marking a modest success at best.

The lack of box office prowess from the second installment was largely due to the fact that the original Tron was released all the way back in 1984, and bombed at the time of its release. Only later on did it become a cult classic.

Considering the smaller audience, Disney may want to end plans for the project, especially with the pandemic destroying movie theaters across the US right now. I’m not particularly psyched either considering how mildly entertaining Legacy was, but who wouldn’t want to hear that soothing Daft Punk soundtrack?

Why Disney's Choice to Throw "Mulan" to Streaming is a Terrible Decision

I didn’t know that disney wanted “mulan” to bomb

DBA3309D-A318-4FC2-BD08-02B0AA129BB3.jpg

By: Keaton Marcus

Disney has recently announced that they will be putting their live-action Mulan remake on their streaming service, Disney+, to purchase for $29.99.

You heard me, Disney is trying to get us to pay 30 bucks for one movie on a streaming service that usually plays films and TV for free with a subscription. It’s not only an awful amount of money to pay for this thing, but it’s also a terrible business decision for Disney itself. Why? Well lets find out.

First of all, the new Mulan has a massive cost of 200 million dollars, filled with CGI and action sequences, so it needs to make a whole lot of money. I get that Disney is putting it for such a premium price so it will generate more streaming cash, but that just won’t happen because of the cost, and one other very important thing.

The kids! Usually, even the darker remakes are rated PG, meaning families around the globe will take their children on the weekend. However, some dingus slapped a PG-13 MPAA rating on the movie, and now the little kiddies won’t be able to see it. And who else will? Not a lot of people, for sure…the die-hard fans who are old enough perhaps will, but you’re marketing a movie about a role model for children to teenage and adult audiences.

So despite Disney putting Mulan up for such a high streaming price, their little master plan just won’t work. Unless some parents just don’t give a crap. Which, honestly, could happen…but is Disney really betting on luck for one of their most high-profile movies ever? I really hope not, though it certainly looks like it.

I, personally, am excited to watch it because the reboot looks like a solid movie, especially due to the excellent early reactions before the pandemic. But half of those jitters are because of getting a new review, and not everyone is a film critic.

It will truly be interesting to see how Mulan 2020 performs on Disney Plus, will it be the massive hit that the filmed version of Hamilton was? Or the dumpster fire that Artemis Fowl still is? Well it’ll be clear pretty soon, and I’d love to see what happens.

Captain Marvel 2 Nabs Candyman's Nia DaCosta to Direct

Candyman’s nia daCosta becomes first female black mCU director!

intro-1557949097.jpg

By: Keaton Marcus

After little to no news about Marvel’s Captain Marvel 2, the studio has finally chosen its director, Nia DaCosta, who is helming Jordan Peele’s Candyman reboot. Her next film is slated for a release this year on October 16 in theaters.

“Although the studio met with several individuals, DaCosta seemed to have the edge for some time as she and others met with Marvel chief Kevin Feige over the weekend,” according to Deadline. Additionally, Academy Award-winner Brie Larson will reprise her role as the space-faring Carol Danvers.

Otherwise, Teyonah Parris is expected to portray an adult Monica Rambeau in the Disney+ original series WandaVision, and she’s anticipated to play her again in Captain Marvel 2. She also stars in DaCosta’s Candyman.

In my opinion, this is an excellent choice. The new Candyman film looks like another solid horror flick, and it’s also the first black woman to ever helm a Marvel movie, which could be Feige’s version of an answer to Anthony Mackie’s “lack of diversity” claims recently.

The first Captain Marvel movie was also a massive hit in the box office, and the release of Avengers: Endgame did nothing but boost those numbers. It also received generally positive reviews from critics, although fans were less than happy with both the casting choice of Larson, and the movie itself. But truly, I think the sequel can improve with audiences.

In terms of release, Captain Marvel 2 is slated for a July 2022 theatrical release, although don’t get your hopes up just yet, as the entire Marvel Phase 4 has been overhauled due to the pandemic and production delays.

"The Last of Us" Series Producer Promises Big Things for the Adaptation

Why “The Last of us” series adaptation will be excellent

the-last-of-us-part-ii-e3-2018-screen-09-ps4-us-10jul18.jpg

By: Keaton Marcus

The Last of Us HBO series producer Craig Mazin has just promised some big things for the highly anticipated adaptation of the popular video-game franchise.

While recently speaking on a BBC Radio interview, Mazin, who is the creator of the legendary Chernobyl, the miniseries about the 1986 nuclear disaster, opened up about his show with Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann. The producer assured fans that they plan to “expand” the source material rather than “undo” it. That hopefully means audiences will be pleased with the final result.

“I think fans of something worry that, when the property gets licensed to someone else, those people don’t really understand it, or are going to change it,” Mazin said. “In this case, I’m doing it with the guy who did it, and so the changes that we’re making are designed to fill things out and expand, not to undo, but rather to enhance.” Those were some wise words from the producer, and it does promise a faithful adaptation that could actually improve on the already masterful game.

Mazin is also a self-proclaimed fan of The Last of Us franchise, so he described the project as a “dream come true”, but he was also honest. He acknowledged the challenges of turning this huge game into an event on the small-screen. He realizes the challenges of the task.

“We’re creating anew and we’re also reimagining what is already there to present a different format,” he added. “It’s kind of a dream come true for me. I’m a little bit scared because a lot of emotions connected to this game are rather intense. I think I’m probably going to go hide in a bunker for a while because you can’t make everyone happy!”

Well, we’ve certainly learned that after the audience review bombing for The Last of Us Part II. On Metacritic, the game scored a high 94 with the critics, indicating nearly universal acclaim, however, the audience rating stands at a mediocre 5.6/10, indicating mixed or average reviews. So while almost all critics lauded it, and plenty of fans enjoyed it, there was a big group of people that just weren’t happy.

For the audience score, at least, it was a massive dip from its predecessor’s 9.2/10. With the review bombers, it was suggested that fans were angry because of Joel, one of the main characters in the game, dying so abruptly and in such an animalistic fashion. And then the gamers were forced into playing the same character, Abby, that brutally murdered Joel. Not just that, but gamers felt that the game was basically coercing them into liking Abby after she killed one of the most beloved characters in the game.

It’s certainly a sticky situation, but Mazin seems determined to making it a success not only with critics, but with the massive fanbase as well. After the series was announced, the producer also confirmed that Ellie, the main character, would still be gay.

The release date of the series is still unknown. Are you guys still upset about the second game, or are you still ready for the series?

Can "Halloween Ends" Really Wrap Up the Entire Franchise?

“halloween ends” will truly be the end, but is david gordon green up to the task?

halloween-david-gordon-green.jpg

By: Keaton Marcus

David Gordon Green, the Halloween Ends director, will attempt to bring closure to the franchise with his upcoming movie. But can he really do it?

Recently, in an interview with Total Film, filmmaker David Gordon Green discussed many of the aspects of his next two Halloween movies, Halloween Kills, and Halloween Ends. In 2018’s thrilling and tautly made Halloween, the film focused on an older Laurie taking on Michael Myers, and Green explained that the movie served as the beginning to the end. I guess that makes the new trilogy’s path clear to us.

“It’s a very different movie than Kills, and both Halloweens,” Green said in reference to Ends. “The script feels very fun. For me, it was essential to say, ‘here’s a conclusive episode to my trilogy.’ I’m trying to bring closure my ‘Laurie Strode versus Michael Myers’ storytelling.”

That means Halloween Ends will be the concluding chapter to Green’s own trilogy, and perhaps the entire universe. However, before the literal end, we will see Halloween Kills be released in theaters October 15, 2021 after it was delayed a whole year due to the pandemic. When Green was asked how Kills would differentiate from the 2018 film, he explained that the sequel would be much angrier. Considering how its predecessor was already brutal, it will be entertaining to see what he does next to up the stakes.

“If the first film was somewhat retelling the origin of Myers and getting us up to speed with where Laurie has been all those years, then part two is about the outrage of Haddonfield,” Green explained. “Mob Rules’ was our working title for the film. It’s about a community that is united by outrage, and divided on how to deal with evil.”

We even got a little first look teaser for Kills, which featured firefighters attempting to put out the fire on Laurie’s house, potentially saving Michael Myers. The 2018 movie was absolutely terrific, as I mentioned before, and its cliffhanger sure left you wanting more. Will you be watching these next two sequels?

Casting Begins for HBO's "House of the Dragon" Series

After ordering the series last October, HBO’s House of the Dragon has not had much news, but the streaming service has finally begun its casting process to the Game of Thrones prequel.

The series is supposed to be based on George RR Martin’s Fire & Blood novel, which, of course, is based off of the GOT books. Game of Thrones ended last year with a controversial eighth season, which scored mixed reviews from critics and nearly all-around disappointment with the fans. To be exact, on Rotten Tomatoes, the season holds a 55% critics rating and a mere 31% audience score and despite starting strong, the the last few episodes were heavily criticized.

The book itself is about the House of Targaryen, but it’s set 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones, so don’t expect to see Daenerys show up. The series is supposed to cover 100 years of Targaryen history, and sees many leaders rise and fall within it. Entertainment Weekly even explained that the famous Dance of the Dragons, which was a civil war between the Targaryens, will be apart of it.

The show runners will be Ryan Condal, who is known for writing the TV series Colony and 2018’s Rampage, and Miguel Sapochnik who has directed several Game of Thrones episodes. Sapochnik will helm the pilot and an unspecified amount of episodes after. In total, HBO has ordered 10 episodes for the first season.

It’s expected to premiere sometime in 2022, and the fanbase’s anticipation is high for this hail mary to save the brand. Another prequel starring Naomi Watts was also in development, but that was cancelled later.

Netflix Reveals Their Biggest Opening Months for Original Movies

“extraction” is the biggest Netflix original movie…at least in terms of opening months

By: Keaton Marcus

Netflix just revealed their top ten biggest viewership ratings for original movie opening months. One thing you can take away from these numbers is that there’s no stopping this giant.

Leading the group was the Chris Hemsworth-starring action flick Extraction, which burst onto the app earlier this year with such huge numbers that plans for a sequel or prequel with Hemsworth set to return are in order. The movie pulled in a hulking 99 million views in its first four weeks of release, making it Netflix’s biggest original movie in terms of opening months, according to Bloomberg data. The film received a solid review from us, and was a decent hit with critics and audiences alike. With the star power from MCU alum Hemsworth and being a critical success overall, it was destined to be a great success.

Next up was a total phenomenon in the year 2018, the horror thriller Bird Box, which starred Sandra Bullock and John Malkovich. The movie polarized critics, and it was a huge debate on whether it was worth the big numbers it was getting. There was even some controversy that Netflix used bots to propel the viewership up. In its first month of release, it garnered 89 million views from users, some watchers hated it, some loved it, others in the middle. It was all over the place, but now there’s a sequel being planned with Bullock coming to star once again.

Thirdly, 2020’s action comedy Spenser Confidential starring Mark Wahlberg also had a place in the top ten. It flew in and took a massive 85 million views in four weeks, and while no sequel has been green-lit yet, considering the film’s success, we wouldn’t be surprised. It certainly wasn’t helped by the reviews, scoring a mere 37% with Rotten Tomatoes. But streamers are starting to take a liking to Netflix’s action movies, especially when they star someone likable, in this case, Wahlberg.

Fourth place had another poorly-reviewed action movie in the slot. This time it was Michael Bay’s 6 Underground, which hit the service late last year, and completely blew it up. With Ryan Reynolds as the leading man, the thriller took in 83 million views in the first month, and proved once again that these types of films don’t need acclaim to be popular. Especially since it currently holds a 36% on RT.

Rounding out the top five was a comedy called Murder Mystery, which stars Adam Sandler and Jennifer Anniston. The film received mixed-to-negative reviews, but was still a solid hit, racking up 73 million views in four weeks. It was a mediocre movie with sporadic laughs, basically every Sandler film these days, though it still wasn’t awful. Plans to give the movie a sequel are now in development in Netflix.

The rest of the top ten kicked off with Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman, which was recently nominated for 11 Academy Awards. It received rave reviews from critics, and despite being a 210-minute movie, it still brought a solid 64 million views in its first month of release. The movie had a studded cast, with the three leads uniting Joe Pesci, Al Pacino and Robert De Niro. It was an epic gangster movie that was not only a huge technical achievement, but it also had award-worthy performances and sharp direction. Otherwise, Triple Frontier pulled in 63 million, The Wrong Missy had 59 million, The Platform with 56 million, and The Perfect Date with 48 million.

It will be interesting to see how Netflix’s new Charlize Theron action movie The Old Guard will perform at the end of its month. It held the number one slot on Netflix for six days, and it currently holds number two behind Fatal Affair.

What has the Dreadful COVID-19 Virus Done to Us Movie Geeks?

By: Keaton Marcus

We’ve had a good amount more than 100 days of quarantine at the moment, and then Coronavirus cases keep on growing, with approximately 3.37 million confirmed in the US alone. But what has the virus done to the entertainment industry?

Much earlier in quarantine, Universal was the first to announce that they would be bringing theatrical releases such as The Hunt, The Invisible Man, Trolls: World Tour and soon to be more straight to streaming platforms like Amazon and iTunes to rent or buy. Soon it became quite the trend, with WB giving their Birds of Prey, The Gentlemen, and eventually Scoob! to streaming services early. Netflix bought Sony’s The Lovebirds and released it for free on their platform, Bron Studios gave Capone to viewers at home, and Universal again with You Should Have Left.

There was no shortage of would-be theatrical releases that studios decided to bring straight to home. We even got the Artemis Fowl adaptation on Disney+ luckily, because it was a real car-wreck. Even Steve Carrell’s new anticipated comedy Irresistible with Focus Features got a home release. It was a whole new way to look at the future of whether theaters would last. Universal gave us Judd Apatow’s newest movie, The King of Staten Island! But there was also the slew of big blockbusters that were delayed.

First, there was Tom Hanks’ new WW2 thriller Greyhound which was originally planned to release in theaters June, but was thrown on Apple TV+ on July 10th. However, there’s also a long list of movies that didn’t come to home video. Christopher Nolan’s Tenet was pushed back twice from July 17th to the 31st, and then again to August 12th. It’s one of the most anticipated movies of the year. Disney’s live-action Mulan movie was also delayed from March 27th to late July, however, Disney also decided to throw their upcoming The One and Only Ivan straight to Disney+. Don’t get your hopes up about that one.

There’s so many more. We now have to wait on A Quiet Place Part II, Fast & Furious 9, The New Mutants, The King’s Man, The French Dispatch, and sadly Wonder Woman 1984. Oh and don’t forget Marvel’s Black Widow, which it seems like we’ll never get to see. And then there’s the final Daniel Craig-starring James Bond movie, No Time to Die, which is now scheduled to release in cinemas November 20th.

What caused a real uproar from fans was the second delay to Godzilla vs Kong. And it wasn’t just any old push-back, it’s second move was from November 20th this year to May 21st of next year. That’s right, we have to wait a whole other year to see the two titans go head-to-head in the greatest cinematic battle of all-time. Studios seem fine in releasing their smaller, more disposable movies to streaming, but with their big tentpole pictures, they are too stubborn to not give them to audiences on the big screen.

But while this looks like it could be the new thing if the Coronavirus lasts long enough, theaters are actually starting to open back up all over the world. In the US, cinemas are aiming for a grand reopening sometime this month. Regal cinemas are now aiming for a July 31st open, similar to AMC’s end-of-July aim. However, due to the virus, theaters will limit it to 25% capacity with social distancing guidelines required. So it might not be the same as it was before, but theaters are coming back.

The thing is, does anybody really want to sit in a nearly-empty theater with a few people wearing a bunch of face masks, or do you want to stay in the comfort of your nice home renting the darn thing on Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, or whatever Google’s streaming service is. It won’t be the same experience for a while, and people know that, so theaters may not make the comeback some folks were expecting.

It just makes you wonder whether studios will keep releasing what they choose to Amazon early, or even without theatrical release, or if they will stick to the good old cinemas. In the meantime, there are still several movies left to come to home streaming, but with cinemas opening ll over the world, audiences may want the big screen again. Covid, or not.

Ryan Gosling's "Wolfman" Reboot Hires Director Leigh Whannell

wolfman-2010.jpg

By: Keaton Marcus

The Dark Universe is finally beginning to come together after filmmaker Leigh Whannell successfully rebooted The Invisible Man earlier this year with Elizabeth Moss. Now, with the Ryan Gosling-starring The Wolfman in development, Whannell has been hired once again to direct.

Universal Studios has been trying to hit it big time by making both remakes and films based on iconic creatures in general, and though they’ve had great success with their two Jurassic World movies, their dreams of having a shared cinematic universe has never really come together. Let’s take a little look into that history.

In 2004, Universal released a Van Helsing movie starring Hugh Jackman, which was an extremely dull ride. It also scored a mere 24% on Rotten Tomatoes while only making 300.1 million globally on a budget of 160 million. A disaster all around. Next up for the studio was 2010’s The Wolfman, and that didn’t do well either, scoring 34% on RT and grossing just 139.7M on a massive cost of 150 million. Ouch.

Then, Universal turned to reboots instead, releasing Dracula Untold in 2014, which did a bit better than the other two. Though it was a failure with the critics, with 24% on Rotten Tomatoes…it did earn back a more reasonable 70 million budget by earning 217.1 million dollars. Because of the little box office glory they got with Untold, Universal decided to start a “Dark Universe” by remaking The Mummy in 2017. This time with Tom Cruise in the leading role.

It was a true mixed bag. With the critics, it’s embarrassing to talk about, with 16% of reviewers giving it a Fresh rating, but there’s been some debate on whether it was a box office hit due to its solid foreign performance. In total, it made 409.2 million on a budget from 125-195 million dollars. So while it depends, it still wasn’t the big savior.

With 2020’s low-budget The Invisible Man being a success commercially and critically, things may start to come together. Universal has also hired Destroyer director Karyn Kusama to make a Dracula remake set in modern day. Assuming that both that and The Wolfman will be low budget like The Invisible Man, we may have another cinematic universe on our hands.

Sam Neil, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum Will Have Major Roles in "Jurassic World: Dominion"

three original “jurassic park” stars will have big parts in “jurassic world 3”

jurassic-world-dominion-1200.jpg

In a recent interview, Jurassic Park star Sam Neill was asked whether him and his two co-stars will be featured in just a “couple of scenes” or a “more substantial role”, and Neil explained that all three of them will have major roles in the upcoming Jurassic World: Dominion.

He said that “we’re all the way through with this film, Jeff (Goldblum), and me, and Laura (Dern).” He comically admitted that he “probably won’t be running as fast” as he did a long 27 years ago. This refers to his first role in the big blockbuster franchise in the 1993 Steven Spielberg classic. He also played a major part in the less-acclaimed Jurassic Park III. This will be the first time in more than 20 years he appears on-screen in the franchise.

Dominion director Colin Treverrow, who also helmed the first Jurassic World movie, always wanted to integrate the three original stars into the third installment of the reboot franchise. But he explained that he needed to find an “organic” way to bring them back after such a long time.

Hopefully, with Trevorrow returning to direct, and the original cast returning, this will be a substantially better movie than Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Which although grossed a whole lot of cash, it still didn’t do great with either critics or audiences in terms of scores. Trevorrow’s Jurassic World was at least a good, fun time with Chris Pratt.

Besides Sam Neill, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum coming back to star, both Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are returning from the other two newer installments. They will play their respective roles of Owen Grady and Claire Dearing. Both Omar Sy and Jake Johnson will also be returning after missing out in the second installment.

Jurassic World: Dominion will be released on June 11th, 2021. However, that date could be pushed back due to the Coronavirus pandemic, so don’t get your hopes up yet.

"Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2" is a Huge Step-Up in Tech

this sequel will make its predecessor look “quaint” according to director Christopher miller

download-900x506.jpg

“It’s going to make the first movie look quaint,” according to director Christopher Miller.

If that really happens, we may be looking at one of the most visually groundbreaking films ever made, and that’s something for an animated superhero movie. But we’re talking about the sequel to the Oscar-winning first movie, which scored a near-perfect 97% on Rotten Tomatoes! Hey, it still may be a huge surprise in terms of tech upgrades and art styles. Here is Miller’s exact tweet:

Sadly, due to the film’s lengthy production schedule, we may not see this highly-anticipated movie till sometime in 2022, a pretty long four years after its predecessor arrived in 2018. Sony recently pushed the sequel back from April to October 2022.

The original was something to be in awe with. It was a solid box office hit, grossing over 375 million dollars globally, and as mentioned, both critics and audiences alike adored it. The real surprise comes when it won both the Oscar and Golden Globe for the Best Animated Movie category. That is extremely rare for a superhero film, and it breaks the usual “Disney wins the animated category” stereotype.

Besides the upcoming movie, partners in filmmaking Phil Lord and Christopher Miller have signed a five-year deal with Sony to oversee Sony’s Marvel TV universe. A Spider-Verse series is even in the works. Here is a link to every Spider-Man centric film currently in the works.

"Justice League" Star Slams Joss Whedon, Dubs His Behavior "Gross"

joss Whedon receives backlash from ray fisher

landscape-1502450559-cyborg-justice-league-poster.jpg

Fans were already angry enough at Justice League director Joss Whedon, but based on a recent tweet from Cyborg actor Ray Fisher, that hate is about to get a lot worse. However, the WB co-president of production, Jon Berg, has fired back at Fischer’s statement calling himself and Whedon’s behavior “gross, abusive unprofessional, and completely unacceptable.”

In an interview with Variety, Berg said that the claim was “categorically untrue that we enabled any unprofessional behavior.” Berg also explained that Fischer was simply upset that the filmmakers wanted him to say Cyborg’s signature catchphrase from the animated series, “booyaa”. He said this: “I remember Fisher being upset that we wanted him to say ‘Booyaa’, which is a well-known saying of Cyborg in the animated series.

Berg also confirmed that him and Geoff Johns, a DC films executive, will be returning to work with Aquaman star Jason Momoa for a Frosty the Snowman reboot where Momoa will voice the title role.

Originally, Fischer tweeted an explanation on why he retracted his previous statement at a San Diego Comic-Con where he praised Joss Whedon’s taking over of the project. As mentioned, he claimed that his actual behavior on-set was “gross, unprofessional, and completely unacceptable. He also blamed both Johns and Berg for enabling Whedon’s attitude towards the cast. Here was his tweet:

At the Comic-Con, he said that “Joss is a great guy and Zack picked a good person to come in and clean up, finish up for him.” However, in this tweet, he wanted to take that statement back. Here it is:

Fisher was reportedly a huge supporter for the idea of the Snyder Cut of 2017’s Justice League, and that clearly shows with his two recent tweets. Actor Joe Morton, who played Cyborg’s father in Justice League, told IGN in 2017 this: “Well, the stuff that I had to do were just small little bits and pieces, nothing necessarily to do with the tone. I know that Ray (Fischer), the young man who plays Victor, there were some adjustments that they made in terms of the tone of that character.”

According to Morton, “I think what I heard was that there was a need from the studio to lighten up the film in a way, that the film felt too dark. I don’t know what that meant in terms of how it actually got translated in terms of the reshoots but that’s what I heard. That’s what I thought some of the reshoots were about.”

But this isn’t Fisher’s first rodeo of criticizing studios. In June, Fisher actually responded from a similar tweet from Suicide Squad and End of Watch director David Ayer, who decided to answer a fan about the broken timeline of his film. The fan complained that “I think that text was added in later by editors who didn’t get the full story. The backstory behind his teeth makes Harley being an accomplice impossible.” Ayer responded with: “Yes. That broke my timeline. Johns added it.” Fisher replied with simply: “I feel your pain”, throwing a certain shade over Johns. Here are the tweets:

The Snyder Cut of Justice League is officially being released on HBO Max sometime 2021, and has received its first teaser. Looks like Mr. Fisher got his wish.

Netflix is Being Sued by the Conan Doyle Estate for Giving Sherlock Holmes Emotions

Henry-Cavill-Millie-Bobby-Brown-Enola-Holmes.jpg

By: Keaton Marcus

Coming soon, Netflix is releasing Enola Holmes, based upon the book by Nancy Springer.. However, their new film and the streaming service itself is being sued by the Conan Doyle Estate for copyright infringement and trademark violations.

The anticipated movie stars Stranger Things actress Millie Bobby Brown as Sherlock’s spunky younger sister, as well as casting Henry Cavill as the iconic Sherlock. The Hollywood Reporter explained that the lawsuit targets Netflix, Legendary Pictures, Penguin Random House and author Nancy Springer. Just six years ago, it was ruled that all the Arthur Conan Doyle stories written before 1923 were public domain, but the Doyle Estate do have claim to the last 10 stories written between 1923 to 1927.

The lawsuit “alleges that the difference between the public domain stories and the copyrighted ones is emotions.” The stories that the Estate owns the later stories where Sherlock Holmes shows warmth and emotion after he lost his son and brother. In Springer’s novels, and, of course, the movie, Holmes is and will be portrayed as warmer. However, that means that they are violating the Doyle’s claims to Sherlock’s more emotional latter life. Basically, Henry Cavill’s Sherlock in Enola Holmes is based on character traits owned by the Estate.

We’ve seen this whole shenanigan before. The Estate also sued Miramax for their acclaimed Mr. Holmes in 2015, which tells the story of a retiring Sherlock, but that case was eventually settled. Sherlock’s retirement is only apart of his final stories, which are owned by the Estate.

Enola Holmes is scheduled to arrive on Netflix this September. The film also stars Sam Claflin as Mycroft Holmes and Helena Bonham Carter as Eudoria Holmes.
