The official Twitter account of Netflix’s smash-hit series The Witcher recently hinted that the second season of the show will resume production on August 17! Here is the tweet:

The account used the poetic style of everyone’s favorite bard Jaskier, who doesn’t shy away from some tunes during the first season. In March, The Witcher season two suspended production indefinitely while beginning to film in London due to the Coronavirus pandemic. However, at least in the UK, several projects have been given the green-light to resume production with safety protocols.

The Witcher, which is an adaptation of one of the biggest video-game and novel franchises ever, has been a huge success for streaming giant Netflix, with 76 million households in total that streamed the series. Though critics didn’t take a huge liking to it, fans absolutely adored the action-packed fantasy series, with an audience score standing at a nearly-perfect 92% on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite some complaints of the complex storytelling, showrunner Lauren Hissrich confirmed that season two will be a lot easier to follow.

The big question surrounding the show is whether it will match-up to HBO’s Game of Thrones. With Amazon Prime Video’s Lord of the Rings TV series joining the “big fantasy epic” competition, will The Witcher stand the test of time? Because of how big its first season was, Hissrich has planned seven seasons, which rivals GOT’s eight. Netflix is obviously going for a big, expensive success.

I haven’t seen Game of Thrones yet, but in my opinion, The Witcher is a beautifully-made and well-acted show, bolstered by subversive humor and a charismatic Henry Cavill. Though there were some questionable bits, it was a success for me. I binged all eight episodes in one day. Hopefully season two can hold up to my grand liking of its predecessor.

The second season of The Witcher is set to stream on Netflix in 2021.

Michael Keaton to Return as Batman in Upcoming "The Flash"

WHAT DOES MICHAEL KEATON’S RETURN AS BATMAN MEAN FOR THE DCEU?

Ezra-Miller-as-The-Flash.jpg

By: Keaton Marcus

the big news

Just recently, we got news reporting that Michael Keaton is in talks to reprise his role as Batman in upcoming origin story The Flash. This would be Keaton’s first time playing The Dark Knight since Batman Returns, which opened nearly 30 years ago. If Keaton and WB have good negotiations, we could be seeing the Caped Crusader appear in the anticipated 2022 film alongside Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen. IGN writes that “…with that film setting up his character to be the DC equivalent of Nick Fury”, he was played by Samuel L. Jackson in the MCU.

This doesn’t just mean we get to see one of the most iconic Caped Crusaders cameo or even play a solid part in a DCEU flick, but worlds may just be able to collide because of this casting choice. We may even be able to see classic actors and actresses reprise their roles in completely different universes!

the flashpoint comics

We have gotten reports that indicate The Flash is based on the 2011 comics strip Flashpoint, involving Barry Allen travelling back in time to prevent his mother’s murder while accidentally creating a darker DC timeline in the process. This timeline presents Captain Cold as Central City’s greatest hero, Superman as nonexistent and the Justice League never have been formed.

That premise does sound interesting to be in a movie, but what will it mean to the DCEU timeline? Michael Reeves is doing his own little thing with his The Batman, but both The Flash and Wonder Woman 1984 seem to be staying true to the timeline so far. We do not quite know whether James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad will follow or not.

2013’s DC animated movie Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox used Barry’s time travel as a foundation for their own universe! That continued with the recent Justice League Dark: Apokolips War. To be honest, there’s not a ton of evidence suggesting that The Flash won’t just continue off of that.

generations of batman

Bruce Wayne has been an iconic character ever since Detective Comics #27 in May 1939. In the timeline of actors who portrayed the Caped Crusader, we begin with Lewis Wilson, who played Bruce in 1943’s Batman, in 1949, Robert Lowery took over in Batman and Robin only to be replaced by Adam West in a ‘60s TV show and 1966’s Batman: The Movie. Michael Keaton was the first actor to play Batman in more than one film, leading Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman and the 1992 Batman Returns to both critical and commercial success. Since the year 2000, Christian Bale acted in The Dark Knight Trilogy from 2005-2012, Academy Award-winner Ben Affleck played the guy in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, had a cameo in Suicide Squad and reprised his role in 2017’s Justice League once again. Robert Pattinson will play Batman in 2021’s The Batman.

There have been so many actors, a few really good ones in fact, that have taken the role. George Clooney, Bale, Affleck…The list goes on. They even got comedian Will Arnett to lead The LEGO Batman Movie, which was a big success for Warner Bros. He’s arguably the most iconic hero in cinema ever, and there’s something special seeing Michael Keaton fight Jack Nicholson, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Danny DeVito as the tormented superhero. And now we get a ray of hope that Keaton will reprise his role!

I’m not crazy about it since we are just about to have Twilight’s Robert Pattinson take the role, but who doesn’t want to see Michael Keaton as the wise old man in a superhero movie. What’s truly mind-boggling is the fact that Keaton’s two Batman movies don’t take place in the DCEU timeline, and are considered just plain old DC films, similar to Christopher Nolan’s acclaimed Dark Knight films. So what is his Batman doing in a DCEU movie?! Heck, maybe they’ll explain it all to us when we actually watch this thing.

what will happen to the DCEU?

Considering that Michael Keaton’s Batman is now able to join the DCEU universe, won’t others have the ability to hop in as well? I don’t think I’d be surprised if Pfeiffer’s Selina Kyle had a bit of a part, or perhaps Danny DeVito’s Penguin. If you really want to get nuts you could expect Jim Carrey’s Riddler! There are so many possibilities that characters from other universes can arrive in the DCEU timeline. While that would be totally epic, studios don’t generally go as crazy as fans want them to be.

But it’s still fun to imagine what it would be like if universes came together.

Henry Cavill Will Return as Superman for Supporting Roles

henry_cavill_batman_v_superman-wide-1.jpg

By: Keaton Marcus

Warner Bros. just recently confirmed that they are going to bring back Henry Cavill’s Superman in some upcoming DCEU movies, however, none of them will be standalone. Which film he will appear in is still unclear since the franchise has many future projects like Wonder Woman 1984 and The Batman, though this is reassuring that we will get to see Cavill’s red cape in the cinema once again! Even if it’s only a cameo. Nonetheless, this is exciting, and I’m pumped to see the guy back in action.

Deadline has claimed that they’ve heard “Cavill could back in a couple different ways, not a standalone film, but there are plans to put him back in the big red cape again sources with knowledge tell us.” Variety even reported that Cavill “is in talks to return as Clark Kent in an upcoming DC Comics movie.” While Wonder Woman 1984 and The Suicide Squad have already finished filming, and Superman isn’t expected to be in 2021’s The Batman, we could see him in projects like Shazam 2, The Rock’s Black Adam or even Aquaman 2. Shazam 2 even seems likely due to the cameo at the end of the first movie from Cavill.

A huge possibility also seems to be Dwayne Johnson/The Rock’s upcoming superhero movie, Black Adam, and considering Johnson’s announcement that a Black Adam/Superman fight was in talks, it’s almost confirmed that we will see Cavill in this. The news of the year, quite possibly, was the confirmation that director Zack Snyder’s Justice League Snyder Cut would actually be coming to HBO Max in 2021 during a Man of Steel watch-party. The director also announced that we could be bringing back stars from the original Justice League to record additional dialogue for the cut. That means that Cavill could return for this anticipated movie.

In 2018, it was reported that Cavill was seemingly done with the role of Superman, which didn’t quite come as a surprise to a lot of people. Why? Well, 2017’s Justice League was a huge disappointment, receiving negative critical reception and losing up to 100 million at the box office. I don’t think anyone would want to stay in that franchise. However, later on, Cavill, and his co-star Jason Momoa (who plays Aquaman), both confirmed that he was committed to keeping the role as his own.

If you want some new, upcoming Cavill-starring content, you have to check out the first season of The Witcher, which is streaming now on Netflix. Or, if you prefer his Superman, Man of Steel, Batman v Superman and Justice League are all streaming! In terms of other upcoming projects, the second season of The Witcher has been confirmed, though filming has been delayed due to the Coronavirus. Netflix will also make a film with him dubbed Enola Holmes, in which he will portray Sherlock.

It Is Happening: The Snyder Cut is Coming 2021 to HBO Max

Justice-League-6-1170x804.jpg

By: Keaton Marcus

#ReleaseTheSnyderCut. That’s what the many DCEU fans, and even director Zack Snyder himself wanted for this world, to release his vision of Justice League. Today, during a Man of Steel watch party and live-stream, Snyder revealed a poster for The Snyder Cut, confirming that it was arriving exclusively on HBO Max sometime in 2021. Henry Cavill, and Debbie Snyder (his wife) also joined the stream later on. Yep folks, it’s really happening, we are getting a potentially four-hour movie coming straight to us! And we won’t even have to go to the theater. This news just became my other anticipation for 2021. The other one was a new president. Yuk yuk yuk.

Alongside the announcement, Snyder said “I want to thank HBO Max and Warner Brothers for this brave gesture of supporting artists and allowing their true visions to be realized. Also a special thank you to all of those involved in the SnyderCut movement for making this a reality.” According to The Hollywood Reporter, it is still unclear whether this highly-anticipated release will be a full director’s cut, similar to the Batman v Superman ultimate edition, or if it would be a series. They wrote that the Snyders are “reassembling much of their original post production crew to score, cut, and add new visual effects, and, yes, maybe bring back many of the actors to record additional dialogue.”

Will it actually be four hours long? We all hope it will be as long as possible, but we don’t yet know an exact running time, altered footage or any changes Snyder made to 2017’s Justice League, which he stepped down from directing during production due to a horrible family tragedy. Joss Whedon was left for the rest of the job, who is Snyder’s assistant. Sadly, the film was met with disappointingly mediocre critical reception, scoring a Rotten 40% on the Tomatometer. Despite the negative reviews, however, almost immediately after the film’s release, fans were begging to watch Snyder’s vision of the movie. Unfortunately, in 2018, we received word that WB had no plans to release it.

After, we got some more bad news, with Henry Cavill potentially leaving the iconic role of Superman. Though despite all the chaos, fans continued to outcry for The Snyder Cut. In November 2019, Aquaman star Jason Momoa claimed to have already seen the Snyder Cut, but nobody was really expecting it to be released back then, even with the cast’s endorsements. Before 2019 ended, Snyder even confirmed that the cut existed, and posted photos of Cavill’s Superman in a black suit that didn’t appear in the original film.

I’ve always been a fan of the DC franchise in general, and what I saw in 2017’s Justice League truly disappointed me, and the fact that Snyder couldn’t direct the entire movie wasn’t satisfying. Me, among other, countless fans, have been begging for this for a while now, and I cannot wait to put it on my TV! And here we are today, not expecting Snyder to release it, only to announce it during a livestream watch-a-along. Hey, maybe it was Jason Momoa’s video pleading WB to release it the other day

Do Crumbling Societies in a Time Like This Make "Black Mirror" Too Real?

“BLACK MIRROR” CREATOR CHARLIE BROOKER AFFIRMS FANS THAT WE WON’T SEE A SEASON SIX FOR A WHILE, HERE’S WHY

Black-Mirror-Season-3-San-Junipero-Gugu-Mbatha-Raw-and-Mackenzie-Davis.jpg

By: Keaton Marcus

We just received some disappointing news. The worldwide phenomenon anthology series Black Mirror has had a good five seasons, but according to creator Charlie Brooker, we won’t be seeing a sixth for a while now. Why? Well Brooke explained that during the time of the Coronavirus, a show such as Black Mirror may be too unsettling. He said “at the moment, I don’t know what kind of attention there would be for collapsing societies, so I’m not working on that right now. I actually want to explore my comic side, so I’m working on scripts that make me laugh.” Well, I guess we’ll at least get to see a comedic show or film from the talented Brooker, but no more of the psycho-dystopian themes that Mirror gave us.

It may be time for the once critically-acclaimed show to take a break, however. Season one aired in 2011 and received rave reviews, scoring a nearly-perfect 98% “Certified Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes, the excellent reviews and sleeper-hit type popularity renewed it for a season two in 2013 (a solid 87% “Certified Fresh”) which just gave Netflix more and more views. We didn’t get a season three just yet, instead we were hit with a devilishly good Christmas special dubbed Black Mirror: White Christmas (89% “Fresh”) which fueled the next season, which premiered in 2014 and kept stamina, receiving 86% on the Tomatometer. But we still had to wait another three years for the largely anticipated season four, which seemed to satisfy (85%), yet we had to wait a little bit again for number five! Instead, we got an underwhelming, though fairly decent interactive special called Bandersnatch (a so-so 72% “Fresh”) in 2018. Finally, we get the fifth season last year, which proves my point that this series was beginning to fall apart. Though scoring 68% with critics, it flopped with the fans, having a weighted average of merely 43%, far less than any other chapters. This isn’t the end of the world, but perhaps Brooker does need to tap into his comic side.

Sadly, we do need to wait some more time to see if Black Mirror really can pick up the pace after the slightly disappointing reception from the two latest installments. Bandersnatch, which was actually a movie, gave viewers the chance to decide the main character’s every move. The party gimmick lasted well for a little bit, but then grew tiresome, and it didn’t pack the punch that its predecessors so effectively did. The fifth season wasn’t exactly bad either, it was too silly, too light for such an edgy and creepy television show. Especially the earlier seasons, Charlie Brooker was a dystopian mastermind, surpassing even The Hunger Games in pure finesse. His innovativeness and his truly messed-up (yet incredible) ideas made this a success in the first place. It became one of Netflix’s most popular originals of all-time, maybe except for Stranger Things, The Crown, Tiger King and The Witcher. The show also got some serious cast members including Jon Hamm, Anthony Mackie, Miley Cyrus, Daniel Kaluuya, Bryce Dallas Howard…And Jesse Plemons! Yep, it was pretty studded.

We don’t know when exactly the sixth season will return, but because of the show’s everlasting popularity, it’s gotta happen, one way or another. It could be as soon as next year, or it could be 2025, there’s no predicting Charlie Brooker’s move, though you should be able to see more of his content soon, even if it isn’t the mind-bending Black Mirror. I know, it’s sad, but deal with it.

Tom Cruise to Film First Narrative Movie in Space With Help from Elon Musk

Mr. Cruise, Musk and NASA Attempting to Shoot First Feature Length Movie Out of this World!

By: Keaton Marcus

tom-cruise-in-oblivion.jpg

With this story, we wonder if superstar Tom Cruise is really in his right mind. Supposedly Mr. Cruise is teaming up with Elon Musk’s SpaceX rocket and filming the first narrative movie in space. This isn’t just Cruise hanging from helicopters, scaling skyscrapers or flying jets, this is producing a movie that will be made out of this world, literally. Deadline reports that “it’s not a Mission: Impossible movie and no studio is involved yet. But this is a real thing in the early stages of development. With the COVID-19 crisis still going strong, we can’t even predict when they will begin to film this project, but for now it sounds like a dream that will not be completed for a long time.

Cruise, at 57 years old, does a whole lot of movies for his age whether it's a The Mummy reboot, a Mission: Impossible sequel (they just keep coming) and several sci-fi films. He’s been excellent with science fiction projects in his career, starring in modern classic Minority Report, the stunning Edge of Tomorrow and the complex, high-concept Oblivion. He’s pretty darn bankable as well, though his films don’t make that much money. He’s not The Rock, people. He’s never done a project that even takes place in space, much less filmed in space. Well, admittedly, no one has ever done that with a narrative picture in film history. People shoot docs there all the time as they are released left and right, though to actually make a story out there is definitely a hell of a job.

His upcoming projects include the anticipated sequel to the popular ‘80s action movie Top Gun, dubbed Maverick, which was supposed to come out June, though was pushed back due to the Coronavirus. That’s not his only film to be delayed. His seventh and eighth Mission movies have both been pushed as well. The seventh should have concluded filming in Italy by now. Recently, the sixth installment of the franchise was released (2018), called Mission: Impossible - Fallout, which is “Certified Fresh” at 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, earned over 791 million dollars globally at the box office, becoming Cruise’s biggest movie ever. My point is audiences still want to watch him do some insane stunts on some epic set-pieces.

He’s also got some more hits. His Steven Spielberg-directed War of the Worlds film topped 603 million at the box office, and both the fourth and fifth Mission movies earned almost 700 million dollars each! He’s not without his disappointments, however, with his 2017 Mummy movie considered a bomb even after grossing over 400 million because of its bloated budget of nearly 200 million dollars. Oblivion, released in 2013, didn’t exactly do well either. It only earned 286.1 million on a budget capping 120 million, not quite breaking even. Edge of Tomorrow, despite receiving critical acclaim, also bombed, grossing 370.5 million on a cost of 178 million. Cruise is a bit of a mixed bag in the box office, and with critics if you think about it, it depends on the movie. If it’s a Mission film, it’s almost guaranteed to be a hit, but if it’s a true standalone or an attempt to start a franchise, it’s a real gamble.

One other notable thing to mention is explaining how he’ll actually get up there for production. Well, with the help of tech mogul Elon Musk and his rocket dubbed SpaceX, Cruise will fly right on up there. Deadline also confirmed the movie would be in the genre of action adventure, but seriously, how does the crew plan to do Cruise’s usual special effects overload out of this world? Of course, Musk and Cruise will also be aided by NASA. Jim Bridenstine, the Administrator of the National Space Aeronautics Administration tweeted that “NASA is excited to work with Tom Cruise on a film aboard the space station! We need popular media to inspire a new generation of engineers and scientists to make NASA’s ambitious plans a reality.”

If this fantasy actually did happen, even without Cruise, it would change film forever. Shooting a narrative film in space is a terribly difficult task, especially if it’s an action adventure picture. Think about actually shooting a Star Wars film out of this world, sure this project won’t be on the same scale, but it’ll be packed with VFX, and they’ll spend some good cash on it. We don’t know much about it yet, with the studio (maybe it’ll be Paramount), the plot or even when it’ll happen. What we do know, for certain, is that Mr. Cruise is well up to the task! Fun fact: The United States Navy actually helped making both 1986’s Top Gun and the upcoming Maverick. So why can’t NASA aid this one!

AMC Theaters Ban Universal Movies from Their Theater

ONE OF THE BIGGEST THEATER CHAINS EVER blocks universal’s films

By: Keaton Marcus

amctheatres-swirlinglogo.jpg

AMC Theaters recently announced that due to NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shore’s comments that one of their VOD releases was successful, they will not be releasing Universal movies anymore. This could inflict major losses on both companies and sadly, I don’t think AMC thought this “I’m gonna get back at you” idea through. Sure, AMC is one of the biggest theater chains in the world, which means Universal’s movies will have a significantly smaller theater count, but it’s a loss for AMC as well, since Universal makes many big movies. The whole thing is a baby-like revenge plan because of a simple comment and will hopefully blow over after the Coronavirus crisis begins to slow down.

Just in case you didn’t know, Universal, among other major studios, released several of their theatrical films such as Trolls World Tour, The Invisible Man, The Hunt and Emma straight to VOD due to the Coronavirus crisis and the mass closing of movie theaters around the globe. In response to Jeff Shore’s comment on Trolls World Tour being a hit on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV, AMC co-chair Adam Aron responded with “it is disappointing to us, but Jeff’s comments as to Universal’s unilateral actions and intentions have left us no choice. Therefore, effective immediately AMC will no longer play any Universal movies in any of our theaters in the United States, Europe and the Middle East.” Damn.

Shore had already told The Wall Street Journal that Universal would be releasing film theatrically as well as digitally after the Coronavirus blows over, but that didn’t seem to have any effect on AMC’s actions. Universal reported that World Tour made over 100 million dollars in on demand sales in North America alone, making it a hit. Studios and movie theaters share just about 50% of the box office grosses, but in VOD, studios get around 80%, which means that Universal got about 77 million of the digital pie.

This means that technically, in three weeks of VOD release, Trolls: World Tour has made more than its predecessor did over five months of theatrical release. But that’s not correct, is it? The first Trolls movie made over 153 million in theatrical sales, but with the theater-studio split, Universal only made 76 million of that cash, meaning less than it’s sequel did. This means World Tour is a big success, despite the fact that it won’t be the end of moviegoing. However, it does prove that even without any theaters to play in, when families are all home, they watch their movies, big screen or not.

What’s especially funny about AMC’s move is that the theater chain is on the brink of bankruptcy during the Coronavirus crisis. Even Variety, a major newspaper, is questioning AMC’s survival during these pressing times. They report that “AMC Theaters looks to be on the brink of filing for bankruptcy, a grim but impending reality that was only exacerbated by the Coronavirus pandemic causing the entire movie business to shut down.” Yep, this virus could actually bring down one of the biggest movie theater giants in the world. Reportedly, Wall Street analysts downgraded the company’s stock from neutral to sell. This means that the theater chain is expected to fall to the virus in the coming months. So what position is AMC in to ban Universal’s films from their cinemas when they are already having financial troubles?

Back to the AMC comment, this means that all 1,000 AMC theaters around the globe will not show Universal movies. Most of those theaters are in the US, roughly 661 cinemas, and the Universal film Jurassic World played in 4,274 theaters across North America, but take away those 661, you have only 3,613 theaters left to play in. Jurassic World would have only made around 84% of it’s earnings if this happened in 2015. That wouldn’t have been terrible, but think about all the minor Universal movies, all the movies that don’t even play in 3,500 theaters originally, what would happen? It’s either a hit or it isn’t taking away 661 theaters from a release. So it will become a big problem for Universal.

Though it will still leave a mark on AMC’s shirt as well. Why? Well, Universal is most likely the biggest studio in the world taking away Disney, I mean they make films like Jurassic World, Fast & Furious, the Illumination animated films such as Lorax, Grinch and the Despicable Me franchise. Several of their films have grossed over one billion dollars, and others have come close. Heck, they’ve even got Mamma Mia on their side. Not releasing any Universal movies in their theaters will be an issue for AMC since they won’t get any of their dough anymore. Yep, no more Vin Diesel, fast-car fueled cash for AMC anymore!

Don’t worry, Universal has also got some films in the future such as the third Jurassic World movie, the ninth Fast & Furious installment, the second Halloween, Minions sequel and more. AMC won’t get a slice of that dino roar-fast car-Michael Myers-cute little yellow people-cold hard cash anymore, whether they like it or not. To AMC exclusively…you may want to think this over some more.

Doctor Strange 2 Gets Sam Raimi as Director

By: Keaton Marcus

Adjustments.jpeg

After some speculation on who would helm the anticipated superhero sequel Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, they have decided to hire Sam Raimi to direct. Star Benedict Cumberbatch will return as the iconic superhero, though what’s now confirmed is that Scott Derrickson, who directed the first movie, will not be returning. Raimi, however, is a very good choice. Raimi confirmed his involvement while promoting his recent Quibi show 50 States of Fright. He said “I loved Doctor Strange as a kid. He was always after Spider-Man and Batman for me. He was probably number 5 for me for great comic book characters. He was so original.”

Critics tended to agree with the director. The original Doctor Strange movie scored an excellent 89% “Certified Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes. It also grossed over 677 million at the global box office, which isn’t a particularly large amount for the MCU, but it easily broke even. Whether moviegoers will turn up in similar numbers even after several years between the first and second movie isn’t yet known, as it doesn’t come out till next year. However, we are talking about a Marvel movie here, people will go.

In case you didn’t know, Raimi is known for directing acclaimed horror films such as Drag Me to Hell and The Ring as well as the Evil Dead series. Most importantly, he directed the Tobey Maguire-starring Spider-Man trilogy. This proves that he has some good experience in the genre. He is also known to have produced a couple Grudge adaptations and helming the popular Oz the Great and Powerful, which got mixed reception but earned over 473 million at the box office. Overall, he’s a pretty great director, and should do a solid job at this sequel.

While we are all kinda bummed that Scott Derrickson has stepped down from the project, he responded positively to the idea of Raimi taking over. He said “I’ve worked with Sam Raimi. One of the nicest people I’ve known in the film business, and as a director, a true living legend. What a great choice to take over Doctor Strange.” Too bad we’ll have to wait a little while.

Originally, Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness was going to begin production this May and be released the same month next year. However, due to Coronavirus concerns, it will now be released on November 5th, 2021. So catch it in theaters then!

Taika Waititi Gives Hints for Thor: Love and Thunder During an Instagram Watch Party

POSSIBLE CLUES TO THE UPCOMING “THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER” SPILLED DURING INSTAGRAM PARTY

By: Keaton Marcus

Chris Hemsworth in Thor: Ragnarok.

Chris Hemsworth in Thor: Ragnarok.

Taika Waititi’s a real joker, so you may not believe a lot of what he says, but the Jojo Rabbit and Thor: Ragnarok director dropped some clues of his upcoming MCU film Thor: Love and Thunder during an Instagram watch party. Though, of course, Waititi also threw some jokes around, teasing the return of Tony Stark in some very, very fake script pages just for the fun of it. His script pages were teasing that Stark would return to meet up with Thor and tell him that Thanos has returned! He would summon a team called The Avengererers. Oh those ideas do sound fantastic, but anything that really could happen in the fourth Thor film? Don’t worry die-hard fans, Waititi also released some clues that actually sound plausible, well plausible in a way.

The director revealed that the film “makes Ragnarok seem really run-of-the-mill, a very safe film…There’s a lot in it, a lot of set pieces. This new film feels like we asked a bunch of 10-year-olds what should be in the movie, and just said yes to every single thing. The combination of things as well, and some stuff from the comics…space sharks; if you look up space sharks, you’ll get a good idea of what this is.” Space sharks do sound like a bit of a stretch, even for Waititi, but he even once described this film as “doubling down on how nuts Ragnarok was.” Is it just me, or is he delivering. He didn’t reveal much else, although he did show pictures of some concept art for both a new look at Asgard and Miep. However, as expected, there were A LOT of questions from desperate fans.

Waititi dodged most of them. One fan asked if Loki would appear in the film and he simply said he couldn’t say. Another inquired which character Christian Bale would play and Waititi faked his mike cutting! (Man, this guy’s good). Thirdly, he did have a definite answer for if the Silver Surfer would appear which was “nah”. There has been some speculation on which character Bale would play and it’s most likely going to be a villain. Six possible characters he could be playing are Beta Ray Bill, Balder, Cul Borson, Dario Agger, Gorr the God Butcher and Mangog. Though Waititi didn’t give us much to work with on that side. Although, a couple other celebrities did join the party.

The first one was the beloved Tessa Thompson, who portrays Valkyrie in the MCU and was introduced in Ragnarok. Thompson made some further discussion on the upcoming sequel, saying that she had read a recent draft of the movie, but not the most recent one. Thompson also supposedly dodged questions about a possible love interest for Valkyrie, Thompson actually asked Waititi herself if they would explore more of his on-screen character Korg. He responded “we do touch on Korg’s culture, where he’s from, the cultural specificities of Kronans, if you will.” So we got some more Korg! Things got real, however, when Mark Ruffalo joined the party.

Ruffalo, who’s a world-class spoiler, went off topic, supposedly telling knock-knock jokes and then Waititi’s daughter finding a fake cure to the Coronavirus! Ragnarok wasn’t even on the screen then and it was all Ruffalo, which portrays the iconic Hulk in the MCU after Ed Norton dropped out early on. Thor: Love and Thunder was supposed to commence filming this Summer in Sydney, Australia, but due to the Coronavirus that has been delayed. Also, it’s original release date, November 5th 2021, has been pushed back to February 28th 2022 due to the outbreak as well. So catch it in theaters then!

Rob Lowe in Early Talks to Star in Tiger King Adaptation

WILL THERE BE A “TIGER KING” ADAPTATION WITH ROB LOWE? OR IS IT ALL JUST A FANTASY?

By: Keaton Marcus

A perhaps disturbing photo of Rob Lowe posing as Joe Exotic in a post on Instagram. Teasing a possible adaptation.

A perhaps disturbing photo of Rob Lowe posing as Joe Exotic in a post on Instagram. Teasing a possible adaptation.

After Netflix’s recent hit docseries Tiger King went viral, there’s been an abundance of speculation on whether somebody would actually make a scripted adaptation. Well, the massive amount of fans hoping for this might just get their deepest desires with a possible adaptation with Rob Lowe in early talks to star as Joe Exotic. Don’t be surprised, the documentary garnered over 34 million views in its first ten days of release. Whether it will be adapted into a movie or TV show is unclear, but it could be happening.

Deadline reports that director Ryan Murphy and Lowe want to make their OWN tale of the famed Tiger King, and discussions are still in the very early stages. Lowe even teased the adaptation on Instagram with photos of him dressed like Joe Exotic, mullet and all. The real life Mr. Exotic specifically wanted Brad Pitt to play himself, which isn’t a bad choice. But Pitt seems to be out of the running.

Taking a glance at real life, Mr. Exotic has so far served 22 years in federal prison for two counts of murder-for-hire on Big Cat Rescue founder Carole Baskin, and twelve wildlife violations. What’s really interesting is that due to the popularity of Tiger King, cops have reopened the case on the long missing Howard Baskin, Carole’s wife, who people suspect she fed to the tigers. It’s crazy alright. But it all took place in Florida and Oklahoma to make you feel better.

In our review of the series, we praised it, calling it a “stellar Netflix doc that could use a lessening of the running time, but still benefits from terrific interviews and a captivating portrait of obsession that almost ended in murder.” We rated it a solidly high 89% “sweet” on a scale of 0-100. It’s got the popularity and the quality. It made a great documentary series and could make a great scripted one. And believe it or not. I’m down for Mr. Lowe portraying them eccentric man that has blown up the internet recently.

Tiger King is now streaming on Netflix for free with a subscription.

Is Netflix Party the Future of Streaming? Or is it a Cute Trick During the Coronavirus

By: Keaton Marcus

Netflix-Party-720x450.jpg

Around eleven days into quarantine, the streaming giant Netflix released something called Netflix Party, which is now available as a Google Chrome extension for free. This extension allows subscribers to head on over to the website on a computer and chat with your friends in total sync. This means that when one person pauses, all screens pause, or if one subscriber fast forwards, all fast forward automatically. It’s not audio or face-time, but something like messages. The chat pops up on the right hand side of the screen and allows friends or family to go back and forth with text messages while streaming. In this article, I will be listing some of the pros and cons of this extension.

There are some great things about Netflix Party. During a time like this, it’s important to contact and speak with your friends, and what better way to do that while watching your favorite film or show. Party does that successfully, making it much more convenient for friends to chat while watching. There’s also a flaw with that as well, since most people would encourage friends or family to have a facetime call with each other, fully focused on the person. However, if you just want to chat while watching a movie when you are unable to do a sleepover, this is the extension to go to. Other streaming platforms such as Amazon and iTunes have been releasing theatrical films early for rent or buy since nobody can go the theater, which is also helping film geeks cope. Obviously, Netflix isn’t the type of platform that does those things, and this is their own little gimmick to lessen the chaos of not seeing your friends or family for a good while.

If Coronavirus really doesn’t go soon, people will be looking for a hand to hold with no friends or family to meet up with; so is Netflix Party really the future of streaming if this virus stays long term? For some folks; but surely not everyone will still be hooked. I don’t know Netflix’s exact intention of releasing this, whether it was just a cute little thing to lessen the feeling of not seeing friends/family, or they really wanted to invent something. Yes, despite Netflix Party being fun and all, the future will likely be a grand innovation on this, something much more revolutionary than simply chatting with people while streaming. I watched the film Hanna on Netflix with one of my friends a couple days ago using Netflix Party, and it was pretty darn cool that we could chat the whole way through, though will anyone step up and attempt to improve it during a post-Coronavirus world?

Another pro, however, is that you are not limited in selection of film or TV, you are able to watch anything on Netflix using the extension. A movie or show doesn’t have to have special formatting or anything, but the streaming service’s boundaries are the limit. That’s expected though, you’re able to stream anything on Netflix, but not going into other platforms. What also could be possible is that the chats could become annoying, and making the viewer’s ability to focus more and more difficult. This usually won’t happen, but it could become a problem for subscribers. Personally, I thought it was fun and interesting to chat while watching, but in some cases that may not be true.

There weren’t any big, noticeable flaws during my experience, but me and my friend did have issues sending the party link to each-other. Netflix must find an easier way to do this, and although it’s nothing too difficult, there’s no reason people should have to spend more than 20 seconds setting this kind of thing up. Though, overall, I had a fun two hours, and it was really cool. Also, subscribers are able to pick a solid variety of icons for messaging, including some iconic superheroes, as well as customizing their nickname on the chat. So why can’t you just pull out WhatsApp or messages and chat on there? Because Netflix Party is much more convenient and allows up to 50 people to screen share. It’s nothing flawless, but nonetheless, it’s a nifty experience that is pitch perfect during the times of the Coronavirus to connect with your friends or family while streaming on Netflix.

Just overall,

What’s Good:

You get to chat with friends while streaming.

To make it better than the average WhatsApp chat, you are COMPLETELY in sync with your friends. It’s almost like you’re watching a movie or show TOGETHER.

It’s good fun during a time like this when you can’t simply meet up with friends or even have a sleepover together. It’s always healthy to connect.

It’s completely free, and you have a wide selection of both movies and TV to choose from. You just have to be a subscriber of course.

You get too choose from a variety of icons and you can customize your nickname on the chat as well while watching.

A massive 50 people at one time can screen share with Netflix Party, this is extremely convenient for a birthday party perhaps, or a gathering of people that just want to stream. But one question I have about this is if you are able to invite people in other countries.

What could be improved:

It’s not a revolutionary invention and what could be awesome is integrating the extension into virtual reality. This could be a fun trick for some people to use during a time like this, but what will become of it during a post-Coronavirus world.

Netflix Party does let you chat, which is nice, but perhaps some viewers prefer to see their friend’s reactions and that would be easier with a facetime call or even an audio call.

Netflix has to find an easier way to invite people, it’s fine, but for people who didn’t look at instructions, it’s just awfully taxing to invite other people. Though overall, we figured it out eventually.

The MonsterVerse May Be Close to Succumbing to Box Office Limbo, Here's Why

The Newly Made MonsterVerse Franchise Isn’t Doing as Well as It Should

By: Keaton Marcus

dcudcxs-f15872c3-6b8c-4b3c-a054-5d96c9a096c3.png

In 2014, Warner Bros. began a new cinematic universe dubbed the MonsterVerse, kicking off with another American reboot of the iconic Godzilla. After the movie was met with solid critical reception and some respectable box office returns, the studio decided to continue. In 2017, WB followed up by introducing another iconic monster with Kong: Skull Island which had a similar performance both critically and financially, avoiding disaster. You may think that the franchise was steady then, but all along it was a ticking bomb waiting to go off. The explosion happened with 2019’s direct sequel Godzilla: King of the Monsters which lost the franchise its Certified Fresh status on RottenTomatoes and couldn’t even break 400 million at the box office, considered a flop with its 170-200 million budget. Now, with the anticipated Godzilla vs Kong set for November this year, should we have worries for the big monster clash.

The idea for bringing back the classic monsters such as Godzilla and Kong was cool, and that showed in the 2014’s box office performance, where it grossed 524.9M on a 160 million budget. However, the fact that they didn’t do King of the Monsters directly after the 2014 reboot was horribly misguided. Instead, they chose to make a flick about Kong, which also worked, as it earned 566.2M globally, but by the time it reached 2019 and it was Godzilla’s time to shine five years later, people weren’t enthused enough to head to the theater in droves. Especially because of the lack of confidence, I mean WB decided to change the entire cast and the director. It just wasn’t the right choice, and audiences showed little interest in seeing a monster battle royale that should have been released three or four years earlier. The release timeline just didn’t make sense, and therefore, KotM generated just 386.6M worldwide. It was a film that needed at least 500-550M, and that was nearly impossible.

Though other than WB’s objectively terrible decision to make King of the Monsters after Skull Island, why are these results a tad unfair. Well take a look at Universal’s Jurassic World movies, I mean critically, they have a similar trend to the MonsterVerse, but in the box office, they are at a whole other level. Why is that? The first Jurassic World opened in 2015 to over 1.6 billion at the box office, and has a respectable Fresh rating on RT, which sprouted Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom in 2018, which despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, earned over 1.3 billion worldwide. I suppose the biggest reason as to why Godzilla 2014 didn’t go as big was because the giant lizard isn’t as popular as Steven Spielberg’s original Jurassic Park in 1993. So despite having the classic 1954 Godzilla movie, the already large fanbase isn’t enough to compare to the amount of fans for the dinosaur-centered franchise. But is it really safe to say that a franchise about Godzilla and Kong that requires each and every movie to make at least a half a billion won’t work? It seems like that with their most recent release, but there were specific problems with King of the Monsters that didn’t allow it to soar.

Well there’s the marketing for starters. These guys spent a whopping 120 million on only advertising and still didn’t get promising results at the box office. So what happened there? The trailers, so to speak, were just awesome—putting together Godzilla, Ghidorah, Rodan and Mothra for an epic monster mash with some killer tunes and spectacular special effects. But the first trailer was released only a little less than a year before the movie hit theaters, with the second trailer released six months before and the final one about a month before. While that doesn’t sound so bad, it’s a long time between the teaser and the release, which is never good news. Hollywood Reporter said the film “lacked urgency” as well. What also didn’t go well was what the trailers were really focusing on, climate change, which drew harsh criticism. It seemed as if the marketing campaign was in a dilemma on whether to show audiences big monster battles or nit-pick us about the choices we make. Audiences were hyped nonetheless, with the final trailer drawing over 24 million views and plenty of positive comments. I guess by May 31st, there weren’t enough willing moviegoers.

So what can we expect from Godzilla vs Kong? The mysterious fourth installment to the MonsterVerse. With a release date set for November 20th (that could change because of No Time to Die’s November date), there still hasn’t been a trailer released, not even a little clip advertising this thing. A teaser poster was released last year, but so far audiences have had to live with that. Screen Rant projects that WB will release the first trailer this Spring, so anywhere from the end of March to the last days of May. There’s no box office predictions of any kind yet, however, we do know that its directed by Adam Wingard, who’s known for the two Certified Fresh films You’re Next and The Guest, but also for the controversial reboot of Blair Witch and the Rotten V/H/S. This guy is truly a mixed bag, with a couple well-received pictures, and then a few stinkers, but not one of them has anything to do with the big-budget creature-feature that is Godzilla vs Kong. The movie will also feature a couple of the same cast members as King of the Monsters, with both Millie Bobby Brown and Kyle Chandler set to return, along with new folks like Alexander Skarsgard and Eiza Gonzalez. Let them fight!

Who is the New "Mulan" Film Really For?

Disney’s Live-Action “Mulan” is Arriving, but With No Identity

By: Keaton Marcus

MULAN-2020-de-Niki-Caro-Yifei-Liu-remake-de-MULAN-de-Tony-Bancroft-1998-USA-remake-of-MULAN-by-Tony-Bancroft-1998-USA-W_1583316021407971.jpg

Remember the 1998 animated classic dubbed Mulan, another massive hit in Disney’s books, well like others such as Aladdin, The Lion King and Dumbo, it’s getting rebooted into the live-action format. At the end of this month, the remake will be released in theaters after a couple years worth of anticipation, but the movie seems to have lost its identity along the way. Why do I say this? Well, everybody first expects a Disney live-action reboot to be PG rated, with exceptions, that’s the studio’s designated MPAA rating—however, the 2020 Mulan marks the first live-action Disney remake to be rated PG-13. Not even the edgy 2010 Alice in Wonderland could compete with that. Will this affect its box office performance, along with the spreading of the Coronavirus? And who will see a PG-13 version of this story?

You can make a decent argument by saying that a more-restricted MPAA rating can’t stop the giant that is Disney after making the Avengers movies, but those films, and the rest of the MCU, aren’t about an iconic princess, they are about superheroes, who have a very specific fan-base. Those people are teens and adults. Then why wouldn’t those people flock to the theater to see Mulan? Well, the sad thing is, teens just won’t go to the theater to see a Disney film of this caliber. That’s why all these animated films, and live-action reboots are kept on PG levels, so families can do the job of making it the top of the box office. I suppose adults could be interested in taking their 10-year olds to see it, especially females, but that wouldn’t be enough to match the studio’s biggest hits like Aladdin, The Lion King and the entire MCU.

What’s really disappointing about this is that the early social media reactions have come in, and the critics are loving the 2020 take on Mulan, calling it an “empowering, mature adventure”. If you take a look deeper, you can see appraisals such as “wow, just wow… I laughed, I cried, and I loved every second of it” (Tessa Smith, Mama’s Geeky) or “I’m very surprised at how much I liked the live-action Mulan. It’s so majestic.” (Peter Sciretta, Slashfilm). Critics have praised the visuals: “very beautiful and epic cinematography. It had more fantastical elements than I expected.” (Wendy Lee Szany, Collider) and the action: “the first great superhero movie of 2020? It sure feels like it. She soars over rooftops, flies across walls, shoots arrows, and is just a general badass.” (Kirsten Acuna, Insider). What’s biggest in all the praise is the noting of the sophistication and maturity of the film: “a more mature Disney film” (Erik Davis, Fandango) or even “surprisingly sexy for a Disney movie. Case in point: the very loud “OH MY GOD” that was uttered in the theater when Yoson An took off his shirt.” (Angie Han, Mashable).

But will the excellent reviews carry the film to box office glory, or will the MPAA rating and Coronavirus stop it? The box office projections have been pretty random so far, with some staying conservative, and others expecting greatness. Box Office Pro isn’t expecting anything special, putting it in a range of 40-60 million (similar to Dumbo at 45.9M). They say that “second to no one, Disney has mastered the ability to capitalize on existing IP and nostalgia.” Although on the contrary, they also note that “though a success in its own right, the 1998 Mulan was a more down-to-earth box office performer”. Also, this article was written at the end of January, when the Coronavirus didn’t exist. Additionally, Wikipedia took the other side, stating that the general forecast has it opening anywhere from 80-90 million, with a possibility of 100 million—which is comparable to Aladdin (91.5M). We can’t expect anything official just yet, but seeing it open even close to the high-end expectations would be solid.

However, against all odds, there’s been some serious controversy over the picture, mainly against the lead actress, named Liu Yifei. Many people have accused Yifei of “supporting police brutality” because of an image the actress posted one day of People’s Daily. The photo included a quote from Chinese reporter Fu Guohao, which is “I support Hong Kong police. You can beat me now. What a shame for Hong Kong.” This gave birth to #BoycottMulan along with the fact that the movie dropped all but one of the original’s music, the humor (which came from Eddie Murphy’s Mushu) and even Mulan’s love interest, Captain Li Shang. Producer Jason Reed says that the production got rid of Shang because of the Me Too movement, and they thought that Shang was somewhat of a “boss” figure to Mulan, and that her falling in love with her “boss” would be too uncomfortable with audiences in 2020. That sparked controversy because fans argued that Shang’s relationship with “Ping” (Mulan’s male identity to become a warrior) was more LGBTQ. All this controversy, and the virus may or may not hurt the performance, but either way, I’m still excited to see it.

The question is: what age group will Mulan take aim for? It has the possibility to get some tweens intrigued, but all those little girls begging to see it now can’t. Also, the recent delays for films like No Time to Die, A Quiet Place Part II and Fast & Furious 9 may indicate a possible postponement for this movie.

See it in theaters March 27th.

Box Office Predictions: Where Will "Onward" and "The Way Back" Land?

By: Keaton Marcus

In this article I will cover what to expect on next weekend’s box office results.

Weekend of Mar 6-8: “Onward” Heads to Top With 55-60M and “Way Back” Slow with 10-15M

onward-main-rev.jpg

  1. Onward (55-60 million)

Expected to easily top the box office next weekend is Disney-Pixar’s Onward which is already receiving some solid reviews (84% “Fresh” on RottenTomatoes and 75/100 on Sweet and Sour), and predictions seem impressive. Box Office Pro reports that the animated film is expected to gross anywhere from 50-70 million dollars from Friday to Sunday, and averages it out at about 55-60 million. While this isn’t Disney’s biggest affair, it will do the job. Taking in the more conservative predictions, Wikipedia reports that Onward is headed towards a 44 million opening, Pixar’s lowest. However, with solid reviews, and word-of-mouth, it should be higher. Also, Box Office Pro predicts that if all goes to plan, the kids adventure will close at an impressive 227 million in domestic ticket sales.

  2. The Way Back (10-15 million)

Our second film to predict is sports drama dubbed The Way Back which is starring Ben Affleck, a highly bankable star. However, with its R-rating and heavy themes, it may appeal more to adult audiences, which isn’t great for the box office. Box Office Pro reports that the movie is going for about 12-17 million, or approximately 13 million dollars—which is fine. The budget is only about 25 million, and Pro says that it will end up at 43.5M in North America. Wikipedia has gone on the conservative side, and writes that the picture will open to a mere 7 million, which wouldn’t be good news.

"No Time to Die" Gets the Longest Run-Time for a 007 Film To-Date and More News

  1. “No Time to Die” Reveals its Run-Time

The final James Bond installment for star Daniel Craig is arriving in theaters this April, and the anticipation is going through the roof. No Time to Die is helmed by Cary Fukunaga (True Detective) and has just revealed its run-time. The 007 flick will clock at a massive 2 hours and 43 minutes, the longest Bond film to-date, topping the previous record at 2 hours 28 minutes from its predecessor Spectre. Otherwise, it’s also notably longer than other Craig installments such as Casino Royale (2 hours 22 minutes), Quantum of Solace ( just 1 hour 46 minutes) and Skyfall (2 hours 21 minutes). Whether this will affect its performance at the box office is questionable, but Box Office Pro is still predicting 85-100 million for the opening, with Sweet and Sour at a rock-solid 95 million—so most likely, MGM has another hit.

2. third Installment Officially Titled “Jurassic World: Dominion”

Another conclusion to a massive franchise has found its way into our news story. Predictions about possible titles have been fluttering around since the release of Fallen Kingdom, but now the third and likely final installment to the reboot/sequel trilogy has been titled Jurassic World: Dominion. Set to be released June 11th in 2021, the finale has brought back the franchise’s original three stars (Jeff Goldblum, Sam Neill and Laura Dern) and combined them with Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard. Director Colin Trevorrow is also returning after directing the 2015 box office giant Jurassic World, and taking a break for the 2018 sequel. The first two films earned 1.670 billion and 1.308 billion at the global box office, and the third should also top the one billion mark.

3. james Mangold Reportedly Replacing Spielberg for “Indiana Jones 5”

Even after the Indiana Jones veteran Steven Spielberg confirmed that he was directing the fifth installment, he is now likely handing over the chair to Ford v Ferrari and Logan director James Mangold. I mean if this is really happening, Mangold is the guy. He not only helmed the two acclaimed pictures above, but he also directed Walk the Line, Girl, Interrupted and 3:10 to Yuma. IMDb confirms that the iconic Harrison Ford will be returning as Mr. Jones, but that’s the only reported cast member so far. It will be interesting to see how this sequel will perform, especially since its the first installment since 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull which opened to solid critical and financial success. See it in theaters the 9th of July 2021.

4. coronavirus (COVID-19) Delays “Mission: Impossible 7” Shooting in Italy

The spreading of the Coronavirus lately has been an issue for the film industry (cancelling China’s No Time to Die premiere), and now its halted filming in Italy for the anticipated Mission: Impossible 7 starring Tom Cruise. Paramount is currently unsure if the cast and crew will be returning to Venice or not, but the release date has stayed the same, sitting at July 23rd in 2021. This shouldn’t be too much of a problem for the production, but it has certainly stopped it for a little while—however, fans should still get their hopes up for seeing Cruise do some insane stunts during next year’s Summer. And nothing seems to be stopping the franchise, especially since the previous installment Fallout grossed nearly 800 million worldwide.

The Snubs and Surprises of the 2020 Academy Award Winners

“Parasite” Wins the Night, “1917” and “Joker” Do Well as “Irishman” and “Marriage Story” Get Shut Out

By: Keaton Marcus

  1. Surprise: “Parasite” Nabs Four, Including Best Picture

The biggest surprise of the 2020 Oscar winners was foreign language film Parasite, which was hailed as one of the greatest cinematic achievements ever, but none of us expected it to win the most awards of any flick. Bong-Joon ho’s masterpiece took home four awards after getting nominated for six, winning Best Picture, Best Directing, Writing (Original Screenplay) and of course, Best International Feature Film. Also, it’s the only foreign language film to win Best Picture, especially against a line-up that included 1917; The Irishman, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Joker and more. So that’s one great shock during the night.

  2. Snub: “The Irishman” and “Marriage Story” Come Home Empty (Could it be Netflix?)

What’s a real bummer was the grudge that the Academy has against Netflix produced films, and this year it was The Irishman and Marriage Story that got robbed. The two critically-acclaimed movies came home empty after the former was nominated for ten, and the latter six. While it wasn’t confirmed that two films that went straight to streaming would win several, but even if they aren’t released in the theaters doesn’t mean that the Academy can shrug. It’s a shame that this grudge is still going, but it’s better just to get nominated than nothing.

  3. Surprise: Roger Deakins Earns His Second Oscar for Cinematography

It’s not classified as a surprise, but it’s still nice to hear that master of cinematography Roger Deakins has won his second Oscar for Best Cinematography after he won in 2017 for Blade Runner 2049. The given film was the technical achievement 1917, which won Cinematography, Sound Mixing and Visual Effects—the second biggest winner of the night. Deakins should have a much higher number of Oscars under his belt, however, as he was robbed from the Academy until 2017. He’s truly a god, filming The Shawshank Redemption, Fargo, two James Bond films (Skyfall and Spectre), True Grit, Kundun, Sicario, Unbroken and much more for a total of 80 credits.

  4. Surprise/Snub: “Joker” Wins Two, but Loses in Many

After becoming the most-nominated movie of the year, at 11, Joker finished the night off with two wins, which isn’t bad, but we were expecting more. The controversial comic-book movie won Best Actor with Joaquin Phoenix, and Best Original Score, which are solid categories. However, a lot of people were placing bets on wins in Best Picture, perhaps Best Directing with Todd Phillips, and maybe Writing (Adapted Screenplay), while the rest was a tough bet. Still, for a DC movie, its sensational to get noms for this many categories, and will forever be remembered as the “superhero” movie that broke ground at the Academy.

The Super Bowl TV Spots Ranked by Popularity (According to YouTube)

By: Keaton Marcus

Super-Bowl-LIV.jpg

Last night, the 49ers and the Chiefs faced off in an epic Super Bowl, (the latter won 31-20), but it wasn’t just football that had people going crazy, or even the halftime show. That’s right, the TV spots for several movies turned out to be even better than we hoped for. They may be only 30 seconds each, but some are extremely worth it. In this article, we break down and rank the Super Bowl trailers by popularity according to YouTube views.

  1. Sonic the Hedgehog: 208,915 views

With over 200,000 views since last night, the Sonic the Hedgehog Super Bowl TV spot claimed the throne with ease. Topping even the most anticipated movies, the quick look made clever usage of several athletes “complimenting” the fastest hedgehog alive with humor. At 1 minute 18 secs, it’s the longest of the TV spots, since it also includes some action-packed footage of the film in the final half. Overall, the views look promising, but this 90 million production looks a bit incoherent, and disappointingly unfunny, but who knows.

  2. A Quiet Place Part II: 140,307 views

Taking runner-up was sequel to the horror phenomenon, A Quiet Place Part II which rollicked viewers with a fast-paced, tension fueled TV spot, earning over 140,000 views since last night. However, who stole the show was a quick glimpse of the return of John Krasinski, at least for a flashback. The original was an excellent horror movie, and the sequel should keep stamina without losing too much steam.

  3. Top Gun: Maverick: 128,815 views

What’s also earning some serious popularity was reboot/sequel Top Gun: Maverick which garnered 128,815 views since last night. Still starring Tom Cruise, and introducing fresh roles portrayed by Jennifer Connelly, Miles Teller and more, Maverick gives audiences a fast look at many thrilling scenes in the air to come, but the script looks a little dreary back on the ground. However, what was most beloved about the original was the cheesy tone, so what the heck, go crazy.

  4. Minions: The Rise of Gru: 127,864 views

Another sequel in the top five happened to be the animated Minions: The Rise of Gru, generating 127,864 views so far. This sequel to the 1.1 billion dollar prequel is telling the story of young Gru (played by Steve Carell in Despicable Me), and it should still have some box office charm left. The popularity seems exceptional, and the trailer gives all the gags and colorful visuals young viewers should need.

  5. Black Widow: 113,403 views

Rounding out the top five was the MCU’s prequel Black Widow, which has drawn a respectably good 113,403 views so far. It’s got some great sound effects, and of course, like every Marvel film, it’s full of special effects driven action infused with humor (this time brought by Stranger Things’ David Harbour). Scarlett Johansson looks full bad-ass, and it seems like a lot of good old fun. I’m psyched, and ready to head to the multiplex.

  6. No Time to Die: 102,108 views

While it may have been a tad disappointing that James Bond installment No Time to Die didn’t reach the top five, it still bagged a solid 102,108 views so far. Also, we still can’t quite judge a movie such as this by its YouTube views, especially considering the previous flick earned over 880 million at the global box office. Quality wise, this anticipated movie has the typical stunt and set-pieced jacked action sequences, and well….Daniel Craig wearing a fancy suit. Looks good, I suppose.

  7. Mulan (2020): 91,163 views

Disney is releasing another live-action reboot, and this time it’s Mulan, which after two full-length trailers, the remake has released its TV spot with middling signs of success. After nabbing 91,163 views since last night, we were expecting something much larger, considering the studio’s last live-action remake, The Lion King, grossed over 1.6 billion last year. We don’t think it will flop as hard as Dumbo, but it sure looks expensive, despite being beautifully shot and made.

  8. The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run: 89,707 views

We weren’t projecting a great amount for CG-animated sequel The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, and it seems to have done its job, sailing to 89,707 views so far. This isn’t exactly a terrific start, but it looks well on track for solid success, with the original being a reasonable hit (325.1M on a 74M budget). There’s glimpses of cameos from Keanu Reeves and Snoop Dogg, and the humor is often cute. It isn’t confirmed to be incredible, but the TV spot, and the official trailer should keep young viewers interested.

  9. Fast & Furious 9: 77,374 views

All the way back in ninth was the TV spot for Fast & Furious 9, which only drove to 77,374 views, but this was just a highlight reel of a full-length trailer later in the game (which earned much more watchers). So while these aren’t exactly massive figures, the popularity of the franchise and the exciting return of Han should propel it to box office, if not critical victory.

  10. The Invisible Man: 75,590 views

Obviously ranking last out of the ten TV spots was Universal’s horror reboot The Invisible Man which does look pretty interesting, and it earned 75,590 views since last night, which isn’t too shabby for an R-rated, low-budget film of that genre. The clip is tense, and well-executed, but quality won’t mean everything in the box office. Especially since all four horror films in the first five weeks of 2020 have flopped.
