So What’s the Story

Bohemian Rhapsody tells the story of Freddie Mercury living a life of family struggles, and embarrassment. Soon he meets a struggling college band performing in bars, and party’s. After their main singer leaves Freddie sees the golden opportunity to replace him, and slowly form the band that would soon be called Queen. You follow this band’s path to success as Freddie undergoes devastating truths that will change his life forever.

Is It Worth your While?

Unknown.jpeg

Bohemian Rhapsody was surprisingly not as good as I pictured it to be, especially storywise. Now here are my reasons. First of all I thought that directing by Brian Singer was overall not that great. He had a few impressive shots, but lacked a solid build up in story, and decided that he thought it would be cool to not make this incredible story shown, and so we should make it seem like a rock concert, that’s what audiences like right? No! Audiences may have liked the highly impressive soundtrack, and cast, but they need to hear a story otherwise it’s chaos! Also I thought that the script was the real weak point in the movie. Because there was none! There were tiny moments of little conversations during the movie which did not matter at all all I have to say is that it must have been a short script. During the story there are many important characters such as Freddie’s dad, but they make big characters like him seem like small characters in the movie making it feel like only Queen mattered in the movie. Overall I thought that Bohemian Rhapsody has an impressive soundtrack, and a few good shots, but it lacks character development, a good script, and a solid story.

How Was the Cast?

Unknown-1.jpeg

The cast in the film was the real good part about the experience. First we have Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury. He gave a truly electrifying performance even with the lack of story. He had a beautiful singing voice, and took the role with flare, and passion, and really lit up the stage during the movie. Next we have Lucy Boynton as Mary Austin. Her performance was cheesy, and amazing all at the same time. She provided solid emotion throughout the entire movie, even though she has a few brief loving moments that are only so-so, and full of cringe. Third we have Gwilym Lee as brian May. Also providing an electrifying performance, and a dazzling singing voice. It’s safe to say that he could have been a true member of a band if he wanted to. The rest of the band including Ben Hardy, and Joseph Mazzello. All had something in common with the others they all just seemed the right choice for a strong, and fun band called Queen. They all performed with emotion, passion, and all of the traits needed to play in this movie.

Aging ‘Queen’

Bohemian Rhapsody has a few loving moments with the same gender, and with the opposite. There is talk of a deadly disease called AIDS that could scare younger children of the topic, the entire band is extremly talented, but Freddie is most of the time a jerk to his family, and friends. So I would not exactly call him a model for children given the current synopsis of his form of character. Overall I recommend this film to younger teens all the way up to adults for sexuality, and hardcore topics that are hard to understand.

"First Man" is an Engaging, Powerful Drama With a Great Performance from Ryan Gosling

So, What’s the Story?

Hi, this is Keaton Marcus from Sweet and Sour Movie Reviews and today I will be reviewing the incredible true story of Neil Armstrong, First Man. After a negative mission test, Neil Armstrong is relieved of his duty, but when he notices the news that Nasa is recruiting astronauts for the mission Gemini, whose aim is to put the first men on the Moon. Nasa starts to notice Armstrong’s natural leader instincts and they put him in charge of the mission, though seeing how many brave men have died in space-related accidents, will Neil be up for the most important in history?

first-man1.jpg

How Was The Cast?

In this brilliant retelling of the incredible true story, the film benefits from a hard-working, top-tier cast including Ryan Gosling as Neil Armstrong, Claire Foy as Janet Armstrong, Jason Clarke as Edward White and Kyle Chandler as Deke Slayton. As I said we saw actor Ryan Gosling known for La La Land, Gangster Squad, Drive, The Nice Guys, The Big Short, Blade Runner 2049 etc. After his sophisticated performances in the last couple years in Blade Runner 2049 and La La Land, the audiences clearly needed more from the somewhat “hot streak” that Gosling was pulling off, and now within his career we have seen the actor do many things, singing, driving and shooting (alot) but never become an astronaut, which he is very successful at, and while there have been more exciting performances by Ryan Gosling, the actor thrives at a more quiet, simple part that Neil Armstrong is with a solid script, a wonderful deep dive into what the man’s life was really like and just such a breezy, calm and serious charisma which so deftly represents what the character was actually like; On the whole Gosling delivered one of his most deep performances of his above-average career. Secondly, we have actress Claire Foy known for Unsane, The Crown, The Lady in the Van, Season of the Witch etc. Although her best performances may be featured on TV and we have seen her terrible performance in Season of the Witch, Foy gives a raw and breathtaking performance of Neil Armstrong’s wife, Janet and really gives the audience a clear understanding of what life was like wondering if their husband will even come back and although her role is not quite the biggest portrayed in the movie, this is a wonderful start for the actress to start climbing to popularity with The Girl in the Spider’s Web being released in a couple weeks and Foy as the main character which clearly represents that after her truly amazing performance in this flick, Hollywood continues to cast her as important characters; Overall First Man was a wonderful new addition to Foy’s already successful career. Thirdly we saw actor Jason Clarke known for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Winchester, Chappaquiddick, Terminator Genisys etc. as Edward White. Looking at his 2018 average, the numbers are pretty mixed standing at a limp 47.5% and clearly, the actor needed another great film to give a solid performance after his confused outing in Winchester earlier this year. However with First Man as a new addition to his career, fans are stable again call Clarke a likeable actor and while this is a very small role accompanied with very few lines and a by-the-numbers script, his appearance ultimately is enough for satisfaction with me, although I would obviously love to see the actor in more complex, sophisticated roles. Lastly we have actor Kyle Chandler known for Argo, Manchester by the Sea, Broken City, King Kong etc. as Deke Slayton. Looking at his career besides a few mess ups along the way including Broken City and The Day the Earth Stood Still, Chandler clearly has a successful career with many solid performances included, and while this is a side-character, Chandler gives his usual sly, serious charisma just enough to call it a good performance which is clearly what the audience’s were looking for and in my opinion, the character is all Chandler needs for a fresh, and amazing new installment in the career.

Is It Worth Your While?

2493_D030_00395R_GRD.JPG_cmyk_2040.0.jpg

Directing First Man is filmmaker Damien Chazelle known for Whiplash, La La Land, 10 Cloverfield Lane etc. Glancing at Chazelle’s career, although it is still too early to tell, the filmmaker is bound to have a Steven Spielberg-type legacy, with almost every one of his movies are 90-100% which is definitely master-type work, and clearly after seeing his truly powerful, thrilling and raw directing for First Man, that this rookie-streak is not just beginner’s luck. Also, with a surrounding talented cast delivering brilliant performances, many beautifully filmed scenes and just a thrilling, dramatic tale of Neil Armstrong, First Man completely succeeds, quickly becoming one of the best films of the year. Special effects wise, First Man stands at a modest 60M budget, which although spikes for a Drama, compared to other similar space flicks such as The Martian and Gravity (which both have 100M+ budgets), First Man is extremely profitable using its wise cost with beautiful filming, an expensive, but hard-working cast, an amazingly real-life-like perspective on the moon and space itself and brilliant sound-work which make it just as much of a visually dazzling experience as other big-budget space movies. Storyline wise, First Man begins with a thrilling mission in space featuring Gosling play Armstrong which is beautifully filmed and viscerally compelling which gets the movie off to a fantastic start, later on Armstrong’s youngest child dies of a tumor which brings out the tear-jerker side of the movie, as we see many flashbacks throughout the film; Whatever genre, drama, action, thriller (which First Man features), the film is wonderfully successful, conjuring up a delightful, coherent and perfectly flowing story which unbelievably helps the already good experience for the audience.

Aging ‘The Moon’

firstman2.0.jpg

Although it is no action movie, like other genre companions, First Man features extremely intense, loud space sequences which feature many deaths (even a couple on-screen) which may be too disturbing for children, a child dies and her coffin is shown being put into the ground and some very suspenseful, tense scenes which have tragic consequences. Language wise, there are occasional uses of holy s..t, damn, screw, jackass, hell and one use of f...ing. Sexuality wise, in one scene the main married couple dances and soon later are kissing while embracing, but nothing really to worry about.

So, What’s The Story?

First Man tells the story of legendary astronaut Neil Armstrong, and his Journey to the moon. As Nasa keep’s on challenging themselves with tests that not only take the lives of many young men, but make the organization, and the wife of Neil worry that all might be lost in this impossible journey to the moon.

Is It Worth Your While?

Unknown.jpeg

First Man is many incredible things. So I guess the answer to that question is a straight on Yes! Now here are my reasons. First of all director Damien Chazelle did an absolute outstanding job capturing the image. He directed not only with style, but also with tension, and a lot of dramatic effects that truly drag the audience in for the ride. Personally I felt truly moved by the story, and shocked about how hard it must of been to get two people to the moon. Next the filming was done beautifully. There were many impressive shots of space, and on our own little planet as well, and judging from my experience I’d say that I felt as if I was in space right next to the captain being ready to land on the moon. Next I thought that the visual effects were downright brilliant, and lifelike that I’m sure it would have been twice as amazing in 3D. I also thought that the story was not only moving, (as explained briefly before) but it was also highly informational, in my point of view almost like a documentary focusing on the life of Neil Armstrong. Finally the musical score was absolutely amazing providing such a rhythm that gave the film twice as much tension. Overall I thought that First Man had incredible directing, an amazing informational story. Along with a visual splendor, and an impressive soundtrack

How Was the Cast

Unknown-1.jpeg

The cast in First Man did an absolute phenomenal job playing in this movie. First we have Ryan Gosling as Neil Armstrong. I thought that he fit the role perfectly because of how serious he seemed during the movie, and even in troubling times how calm he played it out. Plus he does look like an astronaut if I do say so myself. He provided much emotion, and overall such an engaging performance for the audience. Next we have Claire Foy as Janet Armstrong. Not only did she provide emotion, and pure talent, but her chemistry with Ryan was outstanding! Together they both provided a stunning performance. I also think that she did an amazing job playing the role of the person outside of the impossible journey to the moon. Overall I thought this pair of actors is a great example for chemistry in acting.

Aging ‘The Moon’

There are many emotionally intense scenes filled with great loss, and sadness. There is also lot’s of tension, and suspense during the movie. Many people are killed during tests. There is also vomiting in a brief bathroom scene. Neil is a very brave person who will do whatever it takes to complete his mission. Finally the film is very informational, and is good for tweens, and up looking for entertainment, and information.

"Venom" has Tom Hardy, but Disappoints with B-Grade Visuals, and a Great Lack of Blood

By: Keaton Marcus

The Sony produced attempt at adapting the popular, dark anti-hero comics "Venom" is disappointing, despite Tom Hardy's heroic efforts--one problem straight out of the gate is that Marvel did not take full control of the film--and the result stings. Otherwise, on a more positive side, there are some interesting plot points, and a talented cast that mildly helps the film dig itself out of a hole it was making since the start--also the origin story is technically very accurate to the comics, which is likely to please fans. However, the script, directing and storytelling is a mess, a total, unforgivable mess that pounds this watered-down PG-13 rated retelling of an R-rated comics strip.

There are lots of things that went wrong with "Venom". First off, the film was very clumsily directed by Ruben Fleischer (the filmmaker who created the hysterical phenomenon "Zombieland") who was anticipated to make the film full of gore, and swearing--considering his previous career--instead, he delivers a scattershot of good things lost in the quagmire of some many more negative things. This mess of a film was supposed to be a funny, more "Deadpool" like version of Marvel-produced "Logan" which was a compelling origin story not afraid to go for the R-rating. While the film is fun to watch at points, and there is a decent amount of laughs, the filmmakers never go bold enough to make it stand out from--well Ang Lee's "Hulk" movie. Another truly embarrassing piece of criticism is the lack of effort put into the script by a monkey-like outing from writers Jeff Pinker, Scott Rosenberg and Kelly Marcel who create the basis of the film like corporate lackeys--and also manage to pummel the great amount of work put into Hardy's actually solid performance as the titular comics character.

The storyline is just really funny--and not in an intentional way. "Venom" sets up the film of when a down-on-his-luck journalist/reporter Eddie Brock/Venom (Tom Hardy) loses his job and fiancee Anne (Michelle Williams)--soon after Eddie is infected with an alien symbiote called Venom; and they appear to be the only hope to stop Carlton Drake (Riz Ahmed) who are taking homeless people--and yes I mean homeless people to test their compatibility with the symbiotes found on a crashed ship. It's ridiculous--and if you are the type of person who focuses on the loud orgy of sound produced in action films, that slice of the audience may be fine with watching "Venom", but the majority who likes their ears how they are, the people watching will think of the film as a bad excuse for making a mediocre sci-fi drivel.

The cast is--for the most part massively overqualified for such a muddled, below-average superhero tale. Tom Hardy gave one of his best performances in 2015's reboot "Mad Max: Fury Road" as the title character--providing more to the already gritty atmosphere of the film. In "Venom", while the film itself struggles, I still enjoy Hardy's bizarre, and nevertheless interesting antics--and undeniably funny banter with the digitalized creature. There are welcome laughs in their relationship--and Fleischer is clearly trying to add some bromance to the anti-hero themed pic, which at times does actually work--but is a little uncomfortable, and I would still like to see more charm between the two titular roles. The leading man's performance in general, however, is the opposite from boring--despite the embarrassing American accent, the actor is pushing through with the entire film.

Even more so, Fleischer also decided to cast very talented actress Michelle Williams to play Anne, Eddie Brock's former fiancee--this is already such a sub-par role, and Williams gets almost no amount of screen time--and nothing in particular to do than be the generic ex-wife who complains too much. Despite some effort in emotional grounding--the script is also--really, just terrible, dumping the actress. And you won't believe what the mediocre comics adaptation does to brilliant actor Riz Ahmed (known for "Nightcrawler")--the actor plays an iconic villain in the comics, known as Carlton Drake--the multi-billionaire owner of Life Corporations. His character development is dull, and his actually interesting origins are put to waste in "Venom". Then there is the massive amount of shallow, meaningless writing to go with the distinct lack of effort put into the performance--clearly, despite Sony paying the actor some cash, Ahmed knew the film would be a mediocre dud.

The action sequences--occasionally impressive, but generally repetitive, and the anticipated special effects flash are strictly bottom shelf--especially since they spent a potential 110 million dollars on a film called "Venom"--that may be the most devastating problem of the movie. There is one impressive climax sequence--and that is the "final battle" between Eddie Brock/Venom and Carlton Drake/Riot which takes place on a spaceship--the direction for that particular scene is spectacular--if only the entire span of the film could be even close to similar. The new, more muscular look for the title character is appreciated, and more accurate to the comics--especially considering the character's first appearance in "Spider-Man 3", played by Topher Grace--was a more skinny build affair. However the digitalized slop constantly looks fake, well, it's nice to know that all the money spent was mostly put to waste.

The final verdict is: "Venom" provides a solid outing for Tom Hardy as the titular character--and has enough quips to spare, but this anti-hero comics adaptation is a loud mess that suffers from a chokingly bad screenplay...$KIP IT

I actually thought that most of the critics who reviewed this underrated it a bit. I mean it’s not exactly the greatest movie ever, but it’s solid. Now here are my reasons. First I thought that the directing by Ruben Fleischer was loud, and a few times chaotic, but he managed jokes, and a dark enough atmosphere to keep you going throughout the movie, and he seemed to perfectly show the connection between Eddie, and Venom, and a very funny connection. Next I thought that the special effects were sometimes all over the place, but they were pretty fun, and cool to watch throughout the movie. The cast also seemed to work with it quite well. The script was flawed, but in a funny way that sure made me laugh throughout the movie. Everyone also seemed to be having fun during the movie, and I honestly think that that was the best thing about it, that it was fun for the audience to see. Overall I thought that Venom was at times noisy, and chaotic, but also extremely fun, and managed to provide a solid visual splendor.

venom-marvel-tom-hardy-sony.jpg

How Was the Cast

The cast in Venom was fine, but it was really Tom Hardy who rose. First we have Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock/Venom. His performance was pretty stunning considering that I have not seen him in any other films. He managed the jokes, the darkness, and the ultimate craziness as Venom, and was the one who r eally put the audience into the movie as he truly became this savage character. Next we have Michelle Williams as Anne Weying. I thought that she was not that great. Her chemistry was not that shocking with Tom she made these weird looks, as if she did not know what she was doing during filming. Maybe it was because she did not have such a big role, but she could have done much better during the movie. Finally we have Riz Ahmed as Carlton Drake/Riot. There was a pretty good villain during the movie. Riot was scary, and had a lot of weapons. The actor though seemed too much of a pretty boy to really be such a character as that. His voice was weak he had this greasy pulled back hair that made him look to much like a gentleman, and less like a savage killing machine.

Aging ‘The Symbiote’

There is tons of violence. For example Venom tends to eat human body parts especially the head quite occasionally. There are also many gun shots, and explosions. Venom, and Riot both have a menacing appearance, and have one big fight to the death at the very end. There are many disgusting moments as well. Deceased humans, lot’s of blood, and body parts forming back together. Not to mention some frightening moments during the movie. There are possessed humans corrupted by the Symbioses which is pretty creepy if you ask me. Eddie, and Venom show lot’s of teamwork, and determination to defeat his foes. Overall I recommend this film for ages fourteen, and up.

Introduction

Hi, this is Keaton Marcus from Sweet and Sour Movie Reviews and today I will be reviewing the musical reboot, A Star is Born starring Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga. When Ally (Lady Gaga), a rookie artist, still in the start of her career meets Jackson Maine (Bradley Cooper), a musical superstar at a drag-queen bar, they have an immediate connection; Jackson later helps Ally get her career of the ground, as they fall in love, however, Jack’s drinking problem starts to drain his once magnificent career and Ally becomes one of the most popular stars ever, what will become of their love for eachother?

How Was The Cast?

30-a-star-is-born-2.w700.h700.jpg

The original A Star is Born, released in 1954 starred Judy Garland and James Mason and was an immediate success with critics, especially according to the 97% it currently holds on Rotten Tomatoes, this proves that you don’t need superstars to make a Musical wonderful. This update of the classic stars well-known actors Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, while that might not be perfectly loyal to the original, a top-tier cast still gives the 2018 A Star is Born many positives. Supporting actors are also exceedingly well-cast, with Sam Elliot as Jackson’s older brother, Bobby, Anthony Ramos as Ramon and Andrew Dice Clay as Ally’s father, Lorenzo. As I said we saw actor Bradley Cooper known for his colorful roles in the Guardians of the Galaxy couplet, American Sniper, Silver Linings Playbook, The A-Team, The Words etc. as Jackson Maine. Whether slumming it in CBS’ horrific literature drama The Words with Zoe Saldana, delivering comedic gold in Marvel creations, cooking in Burnt, or shooting em’ up in American Sniper and The A-Team, Cooper always delivers his likeable charisma, playing a pretty-boy in almost every one of his films, however in A Star is Born, although he suffers from drinking problems, the women love him; And despite that, Cooper’s wonderful singing voice, drama and comedy strengths make everyone enjoy his bumblings in this musical whether it is peeing in his pants during the Grammy awards from drinking or signing his name on women’s boobs. Really overall, his atmospheric directing and performance as Jackson create another success in his already proud career. Secondly we have actress Lady Gaga known for Machete Kills, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For etc. as Ally. Although definitely more known (and not to mention better) in her singing career, clearly noticed in her previous sub-par film performances, however this is obviously because director Robert Rodriguez (who directed her two previous efforts) was clearly not intending to make a Musical, which obviously, Gaga would be game at, director Bradley Cooper however, casting the famous artist in A Star is Born was undeniably perfect; Gaga, almost always known for her big-makeup and hair styles, goes completely stripped of the fashion in her raw performance for the film, delivering a beautiful singing voice, and although not known for many films, the best acting in a tragic-type movie that I have seen in years, and the best part about this opinion is that no previous experience was required. Gaga simply took her undeniable amazing talents on the stage and induced it in this almost perfect musical. Like I said previously in the review, the supporting parts were brilliantly cast. Sam Elliott plays Jackson’s older brother, Bobby with bold satisfaction and despite an ultimately cheesy backstory, for a side-character such as this role, Elliot never slums it throughout the 2hr 16min runtime, proving just as much power as its two charming lead stars. Secondly, on the more comedy side of A Star is Born, was actors Anthony Ramos and Andrew Dice Clay playing Ramon (Ally’s dedicated supporter) and Ally’s father (in that order). Wonderfully shedding some light on a tragic story, Ramos and Clay play the usual stereotypical roles with solid comedy, and although not in as many scenes as they should be, they were just as great as the hysterical side-characters in a film packed with well-known stars.

Quality

A_Star_is_Born_OK.jpg

Directing this Musical update (as well as giving an amazing performance as Jackson Maine) was filmmaker Bradley Cooper, and while the actor is an incredible performer in his previous films, this is his debut project director wise which just makes the film that much more impressive. Surrounded by a talented, and very-well-performing cast, beautiful singing voices for groundbreaking songs (the best being Shallow), adding up to Cooper’s atmospheric, multi-genre directing. And while that aims A Star is Born to standing with the above-average Musicals, higher-in-depth than Mama Mia! Here We Go Again or perhaps The Greatest Showman, it still suffers sometimes for cheesy, over-the-top scenes, which although occur in most Musicals, it is a little disappointing considering that overall besides that, Star was going for a perfect film. However, these minor flaws do not detract the wonderful positives that are more than enough to outweigh these problems here and there throughout the movie. Storyline wise, A Star is Born shines, being one of the strongest points of the film, and although the backstory between Bobby (Elliott) and Jackson (Cooper) can spark a few unintentional laughs, the story is usually very tightly woven together, flowing coherently with the surrounding talent and reassuring directing by Bradley Cooper.

a-star-is-born-press-photo-2017-billboard-1548.jpg

Aging ‘The Guitar’

One of the more adult-targeted Musicals of 2018, A Star is Born includes some very intense scenes, a few (but not much) sexual scenes that are inappropriate for children, and frequent strong language which definitely gear it to its reported R-rating, but still would not be considered a strong R. Violence includes the backstory between Jackson and his abusive father, a character hangs himself with a belt (off-screen) and Ally and Jackson both punch a couple of people throughout the film. Language includes very frequent uses of f..k, f..king, s...t, a-hole, ass, t...ies and b..ch. Sexuality wise, there are a few scenes that include a bare female back and sides of breasts, and a character receives an injection on his buttocks.

I found this film to be the most incredible I have ever seen in a long time, and because of this, I am proud to call it my all time favorite movie, but I have my reasons, here they are. First of all the directing from Bradley Cooper was unflawed, and amazing. You could tell that from scenes like when Jackson (Bradley Cooper) tells his older brother that he had always looked up to him, and nobody else, but what he does not see, but we do is his older brother crying as he drives away. That’s what a true director wants to capture they want the audience to see special things that the main character cannot see. Next I thought that the filming was pretty incredible. There were many impressive shots of the country, and great shots of them singing together. Also who knew that having a musical with not too much music could be so great! Another reason was that the singing was incredible, and I actually never knew Bradley Cooper could sing as well as he did. Plus Lady Gaga was phenomenal throughout the entire movie. Overall I think it was just great to see an ensemble cast like that to do something incredible together. With amazing directing, and incredible singing voices, A Star is Born is easily on of the great’s.

How Was the Cast?

Like I said earlier the cast was phenomenal throughout the entire film. First we have Bradley Cooper as Jackson Maine. Like I said I could not believe what an incredible singing voice he has, and playing a Marvel character Rocket the Racoon which is pretty much all I have seen him in. It was just so great to see his talent in a completely different form. Next we have Lady Gaga as Ally. Again phenomenal, and I just want to admit that I never really cared so much about her until now. Not in a bad way I just never really thought about her. In the film her incredible singing, and acting made me notice how amazing she is, and how much of an example she is to all singers, and actors. Finally we have Sam Elliot as Bobby. He worked so well with the directing, and provided so much emotion throughout that it’s kind of hard not putting him into this paragraph. He made me, and everyone think that he was Jackson’s brother, and that he is an incredible actor that everyone should see in this movie. Because Everyone in the cast no matter how small the part did a fantastic job.

Aging ‘The Shallow’

There are a few love scenes, drinking smoking alcohol, Jackson Maine does all of these things, and is not exactly a role model. Though, he does help Ally to become a great singer, and even if it meant his career would eventually go down the drain. There is also some mild violence during the film especially when Jackson is drunk. Finally though, Ally is a great role model for everyone to pursue their dream, So overall I recommend this film to teens, to adults. Also be prepared to see some real sadness.

"Smallfoot" is Entertaining, and Features Mass Talent

Introduction

Hi, this is Keaton Marcus and today I will be reviewing Warner Bros’ newest animated feature, Smallfoot. The yetis live in peace, and whatever the so called stones tell them what is real or not, they believe, Migo is a ferociously loyal yeti who wants to become a gong ringer like his father, but when on his first try he misses the target and goes flying out of the village, he sees what is only to be believed as a local legend, a Smallfoot which he claims to the village that he saw; But when the Stonekeeper (the leader of the village) banishishes him for disobeying a stone, Migo must find the Smallfoot and prove to the village that he is indeed, not crazy.

How Was The Cast?

smallfoot.jpg

Unlike most Warner Bros featured animated movies, Smallfoot has the benefits of a fantastic cast including Channing Tatum as Migo, Zendaya as Meechee, Danny DeVito as Dorgle and James Corden as Percy which immensely helps the film coherently tell the interesting, clever story, while not being stopped by a couple of the cheesy ideas. First, like I said we saw actor Channing Tatum known for Magic Mike, 21 Jump Street, The Vow, White House Down, Logan Lucky, Jupiter Ascending etc. as Migo. Clearly bringing some of his comedic talents from previous movies, Tatum deftly brings childish nature, funny and occasionally hysterical banter to an actually somewhat developed character, also having some animated experience with The Lego Movie, The Lego Batman Movie, The Book of Life etc. which clearly shows in this wonderful kids film and once having seen Channing Tatum act in many movies, you clearly notice a pattern of comedic charisma, determination and integrity acting in his movies, even in his worst film to date, Jupiter Ascending you never feel like he is not giving 120% every single time; Smallfoot clearly shows that Tatum has a promising career with animation in the future. Secondly, we saw actress Zendaya known for The Greatest Showman, Spider-Man: Homecoming etc. as Meechee. Although in just two nationwide releases, Zendaya continues to shine with a brilliant and sometimes beautiful singing voice, comedic strength (previously shown in Homecoming) and even though not the animated type, a pure natural charisma for animated kids flicks and from watching her performance as a main character in Smallfoot just proves so much why big animated companies such as Disney or Sony should think about casting her; However the actress fits perfectly with Warner Bros, as the studio delivers its best animated outing. Thirdly we have actor Danny DeVito known for The Lorax, Big Fish, L.A. Confidential, Mars Attacks!, Matilda etc. Although maybe not as strong of an actor as he used to be, DeVito has enough children targeted movies to deliver a somewhat funny, but simple performance as Migo’s dad, though despite the lack of creativeness with the character, the actors silly banter is more than enough for the type of audiences that will be most interested. Fourthly, there is actor James Corden known for Peter Rabbit, The Emoji Movie, All or Nothing, Trolls, Into the Woods etc. Corden tends to be downright hysterical in his films, especially the comedies, and although he most known for his wonderful TV programs and Late Night shows, recently, the actor has started to show solid talent for movies and is quickly developing to becoming a popular celebrity and while we have seen his worst movies such as The Emoji Movie where Corden was wasted, we have also seen his good performances in Trolls and Into the Woods which both intrigue similar types of audience; In Smallfoot, Corden delivers a hysterical performance, with clever development and just a pure sense of fun which pleases me enough to say that I have never enjoyed Corden’s presence as much as I have in this movie and the film obviously shows a bright future for Corden-starring kids flicks.

Quality

maxresdefault.jpg

Directing this family-fare is filmmaker Karey Kirkpatrick known for James and the Giant Peach, Chicken Run, Over the Hedge, Imagine That etc. Clearly having a knick for children’s movies, Kirkpatrick clearly represents that interest in Smallfoot which he deftly develops a wonderful relatable message that resonates with older audiences too while surrounded by solid performances from a talented cast, impressive, colorful animation that should easily work as a wonderful distraction for children that although suffers from some cheesy antics, ultimately works as Warner Bros’ best animated movie and marking a new high with the genre. Special effects wise, Smallfoot stands at a 80M production budget which is the biggest production for a Warner Bros animated feature with Teen Titans Go! To the Movies (10M), The Lego Movie (60M), The Lego Ninjago Movie (70M), Storks (70M) and is tied with The Lego Batman Movie at 80M which is pretty solid considering another animated film released earlier this year, The Incredibles 2 which stood at a massive budget of 200M, so the 80M of Smallfoot is generally profitable for the Box Office and is impressively low for such complex, dazzling animation featured in the movie. Storyline wise, this tends to be the criteria that is a low-blow to an animated movie, and although a couple of times Smallfoot suffers from by-the-numbers plot development, it is one of the better kids movies going against that certain section which is impressive and surprisingly good as I was not expecting a clever, actually funny kids movie when walking into the theatre.

Aging ‘The Yeti’

maxresdefault-1.jpg

Like other animated fare, Smallfoot is a tame, good messaged, heart-warming themed kids targeted movie with violence that includes the panicking when the humans encounter the yetis for the first time, the yetis have a somewhat frightening appearance (they are also sort of cute), some characters use dart guns and sleep darts to knock out the yetis, Mogi is caught in a bare trap and screams in pain, there is a tame plane crash with an explosion and there is also dramatic flashbacks with creepy music showing the horrors the humans gave the yetis (similar to how the Europeans were to the Natives) which is a little disturbing, but important scene for kids. Language wise, there are some insults including butt and dumb, there are also words such as crap, crazy, weird, pathetic, jerk and sucks, but this is extremely infrequent. Sexuality wise there are a couple scenes of playful flirting between yetis and Mogi clearly admires and likes Meechee as we see in a beginning scene.

So What’s The Story?

Smallfoot tells the story of yeti Migo in his village high in the mountains where no one is allowed to be creative or have any questions, or discoveries of any kind. That’s the way it is until Migo finds the legendary Smallfoot a species said to not exist in their culture, but Migo longs to prove his sightings, and is determined to bring him back to his people.

Is It Worth Your While?

images.jpeg

Smallfoot was actually much better than I expected, and much more clever. Now here are my reasons. First of all I thought that directing by Karey Kirkpatrick was positively brilliant. He made a silly story much more intelligent, and entertaining then I could ever imagine. I mean you would expect a topic for a movie like that would be completely off the hook corny, and cheesy, but he manages to capture wonder music, and fun that I almost have never seen in a movie. Next I thought that the music was downright incredible. I mean compared to music like Frozen’s it just feels like something I would listen to a multiple amount of times whereas Frozen’s soundtrack can get really annoying when heard to a million times, and I have a little sister so trust me when I say this. Next I thought that the animation was also very surprising, and when I saw that it costed 100 million to do it I was like there is no way that this is going to be worth it, but then it was. It’s colorful, and bright, and is overall such a beautiful visual experience for audiences of all ages. Overall I thought that not only was it such a visual delight, but also a brilliant musical with awesome directing, and a solid storyline for all ages to enjoy.

How Was the Cast

Unknown.jpeg

The cast in Smallfoot did an absolute amazing job in such a strikingly good animated feature. First we have Channing Tatum as Migo. I thought that he was pretty much perfect for the role. He had surprisingly an amazing singing voice, and obviously a pure sense of fun, and it seemed as though he had a great time acting in the film. Next we have James Corden as Percy. He always seems to brighten up my day whenever he is in a movie. He’s funny, and warming to the heart at the same time, and he is one of the great comedic actors that can really drag you into the movie, and I loved the chemistry between his character, and Migo. Third we have Zendaya as Meechee. I loved watching her perform in 2017’s The Greatest Showman, and to see what an amazing voice she has, and she obviously did an amazing job at that for this movie. Fourth, and finally we have Common as The Stonekeeper. All I know is that he is a rapper, and all I know is that he did a great job in playing this role. He had a cool rap song during it, and seemed to fit the role of a darker character during the movie, and even though his character becomes good in the end. He still reminds me of the people who want to rid the world of curiosity, and discovery.

Aging ‘The Yeti’

The film is pretty much harmless to kids. There is dazzling animation, a fun adventure, and tons of laughter throughout the movie, and a positive message for adults, and children. There are some brief disturbing images on cave walls of yeti’s being tortured, but it’s not that bad. Overall I recommend this film to all ages because I think everyone should see this.

"The House With a Clock in It's Walls" is Occasionally Creepy, and Unique--and Sometimes Dull

So What’s The Story?

Hi, this is Keaton Marcus from Sweet and Sour Movie Reviews and today I will be reviewing Eli Roth’s newest direction, The House with a Clock in its Walls. When Luis’ parents die in a car crash, he is sent to live with his only other relative, his uncle Jonathan and his only other friend, Mrs. Zimmerman in a enormous magical mansion; However, when Luis accidentally awakens Isaac, an evil warlock, from the dead, he has a plan to restart the universe and erase all people with his “clock in the walls” that he implanted within the house one year ago when he performed an evil spell that ended up killing him.

How Was The Cast?

One of the only Eli Roth flicks that has a well-known cast, The House with a Clock in its Walls features both Jack Black and Cate Blanchett as leading characters, also supporting the film is new actor Owen Vaccaro and actor Kyle MacLachlan. As I said first we had famous comedic actor Jack Black known for School of Rock, the Kung-Fu Panda trilogy, King Kong, Nacho Libre etc. as uncle Jonathan. Fresh after his wonderfully written role in 2017’s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, actor Jack Black is never better, shining in his first creepy film of all time while injecting solid laughs for the audiences and while maybe there is better roles for the actor, Black has really proved that no genre will slaughter his immense talent which clearly helps the film go along well enough to save the creaky storytelling. Secondly we saw actress Cate Blanchett known for Cinderella, Thor: Ragnarok, Ocean’s 8, Robin Hood, The Jungle Book etc. as Mrs. Zimmerman. Although the narrative looks to drown Blanchett almost the whole way, her pure talent from previous films and easy charisma on-screen is more than enough to please the audiences, and while we have seen way better outings from the actress, she is a very nice addition to the already pleasurable cast. Thirdly, supporting the cast, we have actor Owen Vaccaro known for the Daddy’s Home couplet, Mother’s Day etc. as Luis. Wasted so prominently in his previous films, this is Vaccaro’s best outing of his career and while not as great as Daniel Radcliffe when we started his own Fantasy franchise, he proves to be a suitable main character and while a little over-the-top, he succeeds on bringing children in the picture with solid results and truly I would mostly look forward in seeing Vaccaro in potential further installments and sequels to the film, even though overall there are better child actors more fit in these kinds of roles than him. Lastly we have actor Kyle MacLachlan known for Inside Out, Hamlet, Touch of Pink etc. as Isaac Izard. Playing the Voldemort-type character of the story, MacLachlan succeeds in his own ways, although never reaching the potential of Ralph Fiennes truly amazing performance in the Harry Potter series which may-or-may-not divert the audiences enough to make it entertaining, perhaps you could argue his performance was scary and creepy, but his character was a little silly, going into the zombie-type genre for a little really does not help the film out, although it will please fans of the director, Eli Roth with some gory-nostalgia.

Is It Worth Your While?

the_house_with_a_clock_in_its_walls-1.jpg

Eli Roth known for The Green Inferno, Hostel, Clown, The Last Exorcism, Knock Knock etc. is usually making the goriest films to be directed, delivers his first PG-rated flick with solid success, helped by a decent cast, visual splendour and a new creative look at a Fantasy movie. While injecting some effective jump-scares and suitably creepy visuals, Eli Roth also produces an infectious sense of fun throughout the movie which pleases all ages and while Roth is truly an R-rated director, surprisingly his first children-centered movie really works even though it is only an alternative to Harry Potter for the younger kids. Special effects wise, only working on a 42M production budget, The House with a Clock in its Walls succeeds on giving enough visual pleasure as well as some creative ideas, compared to other films it is pale to the Harry Potter series on production budgets with The Sorcerer’s Stone (130M), Chamber of Secrets (100M), The Prisoner of Azkaban (130M), The Goblet of Fire (150M), Order of the Phoenix (150M), The Half-Blood Prince (250M), The Deathly Hallows P1 (250M) and The Deathly Hallows P2 (250M). Seeing that this film has proved me wrong that impressive visuals do not always come from expensive films. Storyline wise, the movie does have some creative ideas which may-or-may-not be able to start a franchise, however it stands alone just as well as it would be if director Eli Roth makes more. The story and plot make enough sense to tick right in most people’s brains, but for those who check their expectations at the theater door, this may not be the film for you as this was meant for pure entertainment, and it succeeded at giving fun for all ages, even though its ideas sometimes exceed its grasp.

Aging ‘The Clock’

TheHouseWithAClockInItsWalls.jpg

Although suitably PG-rated, director Eli Roth does pump in some scares that might not be great for the younger ones, with violence that includes scary dolls, clowns and devil robot-type things come to life, jack-o-lanterns around the house attack Luis, an evil Warlock returns and retells his horrors that he withstood in World War II which at the end includes the summoning of a scary demon, the evil couple of Selena and Isaac have murdered people before and have come to erase the world, a bully punches Luis who falls to his knees on the floor and there are also frightening pictures of necromancy and blood. Language wise, Jonathan and Mrs. Zimmerman call eachother names such as hag, old yeti, coward, deranged, Q-tip etc. otherwise there are words such as hell, damn and oh my god. Sexuality wise, Jonathan and Mrs. Zimmerman do flirt often, a girl likes Luis at school and a reuniting couple kiss passionately.

So What’s The Story?

Based off the book by John Bellairs comes the story of young Lewis who goes to live with his uncle after his parents die from a car crash. Soon he is introduced to a magical world within the walls of his uncle’s house. Only the house holds a clock with the power to end the world with it’s last strike. Will Lewis, along with his uncle, and next door neighbor mrs Zimmerman be able to stop the clock or is the world doomed to end just like that!

Is It Worth Your While?

images-1.jpeg

The House With a Clock in its Walls was surprisingly better than I imagined. Now here are my reasons. First I thought that horror director Eli Roth was able to bring audiences into a world of pure magic, and a creepy atmosphere with the power to leave audiences in suspense. Although it seemed that he could not work extremely well with Owen throughout the movie, he solidly managed the rest of the cast. Next I thought that the small budget of only 42 million not only helped the box office numbers, but projected the perfect amount of special effects on to the big screen. For me the effects were dazzling at times, and creepy at other points during the movie, and it seemed to have everyone else in the cinema satisfied with their experience of colorful special effects. Third I have not read the book, but seeing the movie I thought that the story was solidly constructed with a few twists, some Jack Black fun, but a less demanding set of gore. Overall I thought that The House With a Clock in its Walls provided a visual splendor, solid directing, and a solidly constructed story.

How Was the Cast

images.jpeg

The cast in The House With a Clock in its Walls was charming, and overall satisfying. First we have Jack Black as Jonathan Barnavelt. Of course Jack Black provided many laughs, and brought most of the charm in the movie along with Cate Blanchett. He is always able to be a different character every time he does another movie, and he always gets into whatever chosen character he needs to be. Next we have Cate Blanchett as Florence Zimmerman. She worked very well with Jack Black, and was able to give the audience a comedic splendor full of teasing, and nonstop fun. It’s pretty much obvious to see that with this amazing performance, that those academy awards were meant for her. Third, and finally we have Owen Vaccaro as Lewis Barnavelt. I thought that compared to other kid actors such as Daniel Radcliffe he was well… not as good. He tended to be over the top in his very important scenes such as the crying ones, when Daniel Radcliffe was completely in the moment, and not too over the top. To define over the top? Well his character is a wimpy one, and when he tried to be a wimpy character it came out false.  Or in his crying scenes when he made these weird puffing noises with his mouth, and started to look weird. I’m not saying he’s a bad actor, he was good in Daddy’s Home 2015 when he was not such a big character, and I just don’t think that he was up to the task playing such a big character such as Lewis.

Aging ‘The Clocks’

I gave this film 11+ mostly because of scares. The film has a creepy atmosphere filled with thought provoking themes, and evil forces that look very un satisfying during the movie. There are creepy dolls, jumpscares one zombie, blood oaths etc. The film also has bravery, and many laughs for older kids to enjoy throughout.

PICK OF THE LITTER

(2018)

93% SWEET

So What’s The Story?

Pick of the Litter is a documentary telling the story of five young puppies going through there twenty month training to eventually become guide dogs for the blind. Sadly only some make the achievement of becoming one, so not every dog makes it all the way through the many phases of training. In this amazing story of love, and friendship you will see which of the five dogs will make it into the service.

Is It Worth Your While?

pickofthelitter1.jpg

Pick of the Litter focuses on such an unnoticed topic, but is able to bring it to life using it’s realistic charm, and a well structured telling of this amazing story. Now here are my reasons. First of all the directing. I thought that directors Don Hardy Jr., and Dana Nachman were able to bring the story to life by using an amazing camera crew that really made you fall in love with the story as you follow along with the two years of hard work. Also I thought that it was insane to go for a story that almost no one actually cared about. I mean to be honest I didn’t care much for the topic either, but when I saw this incredible documentary, I was like… What!!! That’s what happens just so they can get one dog to become one guide for a blind person. As you can clearly see this documentary can completely blow you away storywise. Next I thought that filming a two year story of five puppies going through there training must have been really hard, but obviously the work payed off from the impressive points of view from every character that took care of the dogs. Ending up with a happy ending for each of them. Overall I thought that Pick of the Litter had an amazing camera crew, and brought an amazing unnoticed story to life for everyone to experience.

Characters

Obviously since this is a documentary I can not do How Was the Cast because there was no cast. Overall I thought that the characters that were focused on in the documentary were very well picked for the story. Here are my reasons. The characters I thought were all very interesting because all of their stories were unique, and amazing at the same time. They focus on dog trainers disabled people, and those who are blind, and many other people in between. The importance of each of them though in the role of making some of these dogs guide dogs was just so stunning, and so unbelievable that I just could not believe it.

Aging ‘The Pup’

Pick of the litter is pretty much harmless to kids, but it has some themes that may be a little too intense or too confusing for the average toddler or baby. Overall though it’s a nice topic for the whole family to think about, and a very cute documentary to enjoy. So it pretty much depends on what your child will like to see, and does like to see. I recommend this amazing documentary for the whole family, and for every family in the world to see.

"BlaKkKlansman" is a Hysterical Dramedy

By: Keaton Marcus

v1-4.jpg

Genre/Crime/Drama

Age Rating/14+

Lemonradar/90% sweet

So What’s The Story?

Hi, this is Keaton Marcus from Sweet and Sour Movie Reviews and today I will be reviewing Spike Lee’s newest joint, BlacKkKlansman. In the early 1970’s, the beatings and abusement of the African Americans still rage on, however,  Ron Stallworth becomes the first African detective to serve in the Colorado Springs Police Department; Though when that does not seem enough, he embarks on an extremely dangerous mission: infiltrate the Ku Klux Klan (the white-man hate group), recruiting more experienced cop, Phillip to support him in one of the most incredible (true) undercover missions of all time and to exploit one of the most evil groups in history.

How Was The Cast?

blackkklansman.jpg

In Spike Lee’s newest flick, we notice Denzel Washington’s son, David Washington take the lead role of Ron Stallworth, actor Adam Driver to play Phillip Zimmerman and experienced comedic actor Topher Grace play Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan (David Duke). As I said we witnessed Denzel’s son, David Washington (Monsters and Men) take on the iconic role of Ron Stallworth who also happens to be the author of the critically-acclaimed book, BlacKkKlansman. Taking his first major role with a playful, fun attitude, Washington may not be as experienced as his veteran father, Denzel, but he certainly has an immense load of talent and with a breezy and ambitious narrative, experienced talent surrounding  him and is just so wonderful and fitting as the deeply explained main character of Stallworth. Secondly, more experienced actor Adam Driver known for Silence, Paterson, Lincoln, the Star Wars saga, Logan Lucky etc. With a previous long-streak of acclaimed films, Driver also has to play one of the many hard characters to perform in the film, having to express as a character about hating Jews, African Americans etc. and doing it with such a serious tone proves once again that Driver will be seen in many future films. Injecting laughs, energy and hints of his previous performances all into this once role, Driver succeeds on so many levels, and for some reasons I would call it his best performance to date, although he is sometimes kept from the spotlight by Washington’s dazzling performance. Thirdly also known as a veteran to acting was actor Topher Grace known for That 70’s Show, The Simpsons, Traffic, In Good Company etc. as the evil Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan, David Duke. Recently, Dr. David Duke responded negatively to this film saying that they interpreted it all wrong, but clearly by watching this film and Topher Grace’s performance I would rather trust the book by Ron Stallworth and the film by Spike Lee, than the tyrantic Duke expressing his wants to clean America of these “nig..rs” on many of his former speeches throughout the world. Going back to Grace’s performance, the unusual fact that a comedic actor would be playing such a serious role like this is absurd, but Grace proves me wrong providing a truly riveting look at the leader of the Ku Klux Klan with a thrilling, thought provoking and colorful look at the fool, racist and overall tyrant, David Duke. Also cameoing at the opening scene was actor Alec Baldwin playing Dr. Kennebrew Beauregard who sinks his teeth into an intentionally ridiculous, but very hard-core intro to how things were in the 70’s for African Americans getting things to a brilliant start.

Is It Worth Your While?

zobrobr.jpg

Although we have seen director Spike Lee hit his downs (She Hate Me) and his highs (Malcolm X), the audience has never seen Lee at his full potential, directing BlacKkKlansman with skill and frolic, bouncing from different genres (Comedy, Crime, Drama) in such talent that many people could call this the best Spike joint of all time with a tautly told storyline, developed characters, a talented cast and even producer Jordan Peele at the helm all completing this film to a thrilling, well-directed, brilliantly acted take on the CRAZY, OUTRAGEOUS, INCREDIBLE TRUE STORY! Storyline wise, Lee’s incredible directing and above-average performances by the cast help a ton while the film develops clever twists, creative look at American racism back in the 70’s giving in laughs and possible tear-jerker moments while never derailing off topic and making Americans all over realize that this is very, very wrong, but also gives an infectious sense of fun and entertainment making it a stupendous mash-up between a documentary and a blockbuster comedy.

Aging ‘The 70’s’

download-2.jpg

Though not a hard R-rated flick, this Spike Lee joint is certainly not for kids, and will result well to mature teens and adults as this film contains violence such as the common talkings of beatings of the African Americans, also including a fatal (tear-jerking) explosion, guns are used frequently and in a post-credit sequence scenes depict the intense beatings of African Americans, a car runs over a person and there are many clips of violent protests, shouting etc. Language wise, there are frequent uses of f..ck and s..t, followed by ass, c...sucker, d..k, t.tty, hell plus various insults such as n..ger, f.g etc. Sexuality wise, there are some sexual references and a scene of a white-cop harassing two African American women after them being pulled over.

So What’s The Story?

Years after a sudden impact of an enormous beast during an underwater rescue mission led by a man named Jonas Taylor who soon retired. An underwater observation laboratory is built for going down to depths that no one has ever reached before suddenly another impact occurred, and Jonas is called back in to help find out what this beast is, and kill it. Well turns out it’s a 70 foot long Megalodon, looking for nothing, but blood, and terror throughout the ocean.

The Meg is not the greatest shark thriller you will come across, but on it’s own it’s actually a pretty fun movie, now here are my reasons. First of all I thought that director Jon Turteltaub directed it in a way that was fun, and certainly faced paced, though the simple story made it pretty predictable the deep sea thrills made you mostly forget about that. So overall the directing was fairly good. Next I thought that the effects were cool, but certainly were not a 150 million budget! I mean sure there’s a big shark, and blood, but not that much else. I also thought that the cinematography underwater was pretty good, and really put you into the movie especially in 3D. Now back to the story, some of the plot was overly ridiculous, and was filled with nothing but splash! Bang! Kaboom! Also, (this is a spoiler so you may skip it if you like) putting in two sharks was cool, but was a little stupid given the fact that it popped out of nowhere, and wrecked a boat. Maybe because the crew was out of ideas, and needed something to keep the movie going, or maybe it was in the book? I don’t really know. Overall I thought that The Meg had good directing, good underwater cinematography, but a predictable, and sometimes overly ridiculous plot.

How Was the Cast

images-1.jpeg

Overall I thought that the cast in The Meg was pretty good. First we have Jason Statham as Jonas Taylor. I thought that he suited the role really well, and managed to stay in character the whole film. Also managing to nail one or two jokes as well as fighting a megalodon. Next we have BingBing Li as Suyin. She has played in a couple fairly fun films, and in this she nailed the emotion, the getting into character, and actually going into a real shark cage which was pretty cool. Third we have Rainn Wilson as Morris. I thought that he managed to bring all of the comedic jokes, and laughter into the movie that soothed everyone's tension in the cinema, and by using his undeniable charm, he nailed it. Fourth, and finally we have Winston Chao as Zhang. Small roles MOST of the time never cease to amaze me. This guy could of had more to do in the movie, but the dramatic effect of his death was fine as well. I thought that he nailed the emotion with his daughter, but was super stiff while doing everything else in the movie just like standing there in the sidelines saying stuff.

Aging ‘The Tooth’

I gave this film 13+ mostly because of tension, and violence. There is a lot of blood from carcasses, whales are shown ripped apart. There are many suspenseful thrills full of sharks. There are scenes of people being devoured, a bloody  arm is retrieved from the water. Jonas is a trustworthy character who will do anything to save his friends, even if it means battling the biggest shark ever to roam across the ocean causing mass terror to everybody it sees or smells.

So What’s The Story?

Hi, this is Keaton Marcus from Sweet and Sour Movie Reviews and today I will be reviewing the newest addition to the creature-feature genre, Warner Bros.’ The Meg. When a deep-sea submersible is attacked by a massive shark known as the Megalodon thought to be extinct, it lies deep down in the Pacific Ocean with the crew trapped inside, expert diver Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham) is recruited by a Chinese Oceanographer (Winston Chao) so save the lost crew and the ocean itself before the entire world faces its 75-foot threat which turns out to be the same creature Jonas encountered on his last mission years ago.

the-meg-movie-latest-poster-5k-uf-1600x1200.jpg

How Was The Cast?

A very unusual choice for the casting directors to choose action flick actor Jason Statham to fight the shark, but for now it seems to be working out for audiences just fine. More of the cast includes Bingbing Li as Suyin, Rainn Wilson as Morris and Cliff Curtis as Mac. As I said actor Jason Statham known for The Transporter franchise, Parker, The Fast and Furious franchise, Spy, The Italian Job etc. as the diving expert Jonas Taylor. Although neither as convincing as his game action roles in previous movies, Statham manages to still create an enjoyable and fun performance even with a shakily written narrative and watery story which is mostly covered up by the actor’s sheer effort and energy put into the main character role luring in audiences for another solid performance by the brilliant actor. Secondly we saw Chinese actress Bingbing Li known for Transformers: Age of Extinction, The Forbidden Kingdom, Resident Evil: Retribution etc. as Chinese scientist Suyin. Like Statham, Li mostly specialized as side-characters in high-octane action films and after her last terrible major performance four years ago in Transformers: Age of Extinction, the actress largely improves giving a solid female and diverse role model, solid acting while trudging through the mediocre brains of the overall film which may or may not be a huge endorsement to the quality of the movie, but still diverts viewers from other flaws that are floating nearby. Thirdly we have actor Rainn Wilson known for Smurfs: The Lost Village, The Boy, The Office, Family Guy etc. as the cocky billionaire Morris. Considering last year Wilson was the evil wizard Gargamel in Smurfs: The Lost Village, the actor did a solid job on delivering some laughable jokes to fulfill his character’s title and although we have seen other (better) original versions of his role, the actor still uses his previous comedic talents to lighten the movie making the flick much more ridiculous and fun which all to audiences brains as purely awesome. Lastly we saw actor Cliff Curtis known for The Last Airbender, Live Free or Die Hard, Fear the Walking Dead, The Insider etc. Looking at his lengthy career proves that this actor is a pure mixed bag and you really do not know what to expect and in this case audiences should not expect much with Curtis delivering a stiff and choppy performance as a character that director Turteltaub could not care about less pounding the actor to death in his almost god-awful performance and his worst besides his role as the Fire Lord in terrible Fantasy movie The Last Airbender, and with The Meg it creates another slump in his career.

Is It Worth Your While?

960x540-2-1.jpg

Directing this blatantly ridiculous, but fun shark pic is filmmaker Jon Turteltaub known for Last Vegas, National Treasure, Cool Runnings etc. Though not as talented or actually as smart for that matter as director Steven Spielberg on Jaws, Turteltaub continues his so-so career with another incoherent, fun action-filled creature-feature that will never match up to Jaws (as I said) or even 2016’s The Shallows, but it does tower over most creature-features and is marginally better than 2017’s 47 Meters Down and while it still could have been much better considering the whopping premise, The Meg settles for a so-so directed, highly entertaining, action filled decent thrill ride that adds to the shark attack genre with mostly satisfaction. Special effects wise, The Meg really took too the skies with budgets, spending a massive 150M on really only the giant shark which although seems a little much is very appropriately scary and real; Plus, it ends up huge for the genre with Jaws (7M), 47 Meters Down (5.5M) and The Shallows (25M) which may not end up the most profitable for Box Office, it was still wisely spent on CGI. Storyline and plotting wise, The Meg does not take a huge chomp and although filled with thrills and action, it may not be the cleverest out there, but for a Summer blockbuster the film does decently well by diverting audiences from the clearly seen flaws with a purely enjoyable romp and although it might not cover it up fully, most viewers in the mood for a giant shark flick will be satisfied.

Aging ‘A Megalodon’

TheMeg.jpg

Commonly sticking to its PG-13 MPAA rating and other similar shark movies with violence that includes many bloody wounds, character deaths, in one scene a woman falls and is stabbed by a screwdriver, chum (fish guts) left in the water for bait, sudden shark attacks (jump scares), a young girl is briefly in an action sequence, a dead whale is found with chunks torn out of its carcass and one scene dead sharks are sprawled all over dead because of poachers and the shark is cut open and stabbed in the eye. Language wise there are uses of s..t, son of a b..ch, hell, damn, bastard and a young girl uses the insult of a-hole. Sexuality wise, there is one scene where Jonas is shirtless and a woman is flattered by this plus other scenes of flirting are included.

So What’s The Story?

Hi, this is Keaton Marcus from Sweet and Sour Movie Reviews and today I will be reviewing Disney’s latest installment, Christopher Robin. When a creative boy named Christopher (Ewan McGregor) leaves his talking stuffy friends later becoming a dull businessman, Pooh his best friend finds him in London to go on a mission to get back together to find their pals and most importantly win back his family’s hearts after leaving them to go on vacation alone, for his work.

How Was The Cast?

Christopher-Robin-Movie-Review-2-Disney.jpg

After a couple years break from film acting we see Ewan McGregor’s rare performance in kids films as the quite famous character of Christopher Robin and after McGregor’s own problems as a husband it is quite unusual to see the actor in such a film that has a main theme in family. More of the cast includes Hayley Atwell as Evelyn and Jim Cummings as Winnie the Pooh. As I said we saw actor Ewan Mcgregor known for the Star Wars franchise, Beauty and the Beast, Trainspotting, Big Fish etc. as the almost overtold character of Christopher Robin. Like I said before with the leaving of his wife as a real life husband we would never really expect McGregor to act in another film that has the family theme to it, but surprisingly using all of his previous talented performances, the actor playfully tends to a solid script and the new creative element of going deep into character development of Robin overall delivering very acceptable results and although it might not be as convincing as his other performances, the actor creates a watchable returning performance as the immensely famous character. Secondly we saw British actress Hayley Atwell known for the Marvel Universe, The Duchess, Cinderella etc. as Christopher Robin’s wife Evelyn. Mostly known for painfully small parts in solid movies, Atwell is not a bad actress overall but I never really feel like the actress knows what she is actually doing. In Christopher Robin, Atwell features her worst performance of her career with a robot-like-written part, stiff acting and really just adds no magic to the film really making most viewers focus on better performances within the talented cast. Lastly we have famous voice-actor Jim Cummings known for The Lion King, Pocahontas, the Winnie the Pooh collection, Tarzan etc. as CGI’d critter Winnie the Pooh. With an entire career of animated characters there is no going wrong with Cummings, and although he has had better performances in other carnations, the actor leverages on kiddy slapstick, a damn right laugh-out-loud script and overall just as a character is so well set-up and written that his performance mostly overcomes the movie’s clear flaws even though Cummings delivery is somewhat lacking to differentiate from previous carnations of the character.

Is It Worth Your While?

christopher-robin-movie-review-gq.jpg

Directing this joint is extremely accomplished director Mark Forster known for Monster’s Ball, Finding Neverland, World War Z and Casino Royale who clearly just wanted to make some more cash with this feature film. Lacking in story, plot, entertainment to older audiences and the conviction of his other movies Forster also clearly suffers from too many characters on screen and a confusingly rushed running time, and although a mostly solid cast provides some cover up, Christopher Robin’s directing mostly feels like another average kids film. And compared to his other (better) debuts this family flick is pale even though it happens to be better than most Disney-live action movies. Special effects wise, Disney has settled down quite a lot after the eruption of Marvel movies going from Infinity War’s 300M budget to the 75M budget of Christopher Robin which is mostly used on creative set pieces, a decent cast and really concentrated visuals at least giving the movie a magical feel to it despite the lack of brains; Really overall the CGI’d critters of this flick are more impressively animated and voiced than the Alvin and the Chipmunks franchise, Marmaduke and G-Force. Storytelling and plot wise, Christopher Robin could have been one of the cleverest, most brilliant films of the year, but settles for a simple, routine kids film and with the talents behind this mess it is almost unforgivable to watch another short, clumsy shabby retelling of a truly classic story and while McGregor and Cummings shine nothing can really save the film from a forced mildly entertaining, somewhat cute mediocre adaption for Disney.

Aging ‘Winnie the Pooh’

christopher-robin-kids.jpg

Much darker and more mature than other Disney kids adaptations, Christopher Robin’s violence includes a car crash, imaginings of a creepy creature, Christopher’s father dies early in the movie, there is a brief sequence of war violence including explosions and in very few scenes there is intense music and cinematography that might scare off younger kids. Language wise there is creative rude humor used such as Pooh saying he is a bear of very little brain, Christopher calls Winslow a type of monster known as a Woozle and other variations of ‘lost his marbles’, stupid and such. Sexuality wise there is really nothing to worry about with the exception of embraces, kissing and dancing in a few scenes.

So What’s The Story?

Christopher Robin, now a grown man with a family, and job, and no reason to have fun. Soon he realizes how broken his life really is, and so the fates reunite him with his old pal Winnie the Pooh, and soon enough he is on an adventure with Winnie to find Pooh’s friends, and for Christopher Robin to find himself again, and to realize that it’s always okay to have fun even as an adult.

Is It Worth Your While?

Unknown.jpeg

Christopher Robin is another one of those fairly good heartwarming movies, but it can’t quite compare with the original’s, now here are my reasons. First of all I thought that director Mark Forster directed it in a way that was entertaining for all ages as well as providing heartwarming messages for the family. The only flaw that the movie could possibly have is that it was predictable, but the story is crafted so well that it’s hard to realize that. Next (as said earlier) I thought that the story was so predictable, but fun (for me) that it’s easy to come up with a simple one sentence summary of the entire movie. Also I thought that the cinematography was amazing, and was blended really well with the beautiful scenes. Overall I thought that Christopher Robin can not fully live up to the original films, but it still manages to provide good directing, heartwarming messages, and stunning cinematography.

How Was the Cast

images.jpeg

Overall I thought that the cast in Christopher Robin did a very good job. First we have Ewan Mcgregor as Christopher Robin. I thought that he did a good job playing a character with a broken life needing to fix it because he provided the right amount of energy, and his all into playing this amazing character. Next we have Jim Cummings as Winnie the Pooh. I thought that Jim did the voice very well, in a way that perfectly matched the original, and with the combination of a hilarious script, and tons of experience such as Winnie the Pooh (2011 88% Sweet) it’s safe to say that he was perfect for the job. Third we have Hayley Atwell as Evelyn Robin. It was interesting to see her not play in a Marvel film, but in a calm family film, but she was not that good. Her energy felt robotic, and the chemistry between her, and Ewan needed more emotional power. Don’t get me wrong she is a good actress, but she may have been the wrong choice for a movie like this. Fourth, and finally we have Bronte Carmichael as Madeline Robin. She has played in a few films (small parts) such as The Darkest Hour, (2017) and On Chesil Beach. (2017) I thought that in this she was emotionally powerful, and had many great moments during the movie such as the pain of not having a proper childhood with her father.

Aging ‘Pooh Bear’

I gave this movie 7+ because of a few dark themes, and brief war violence. Other than that the movie is filled with nothing, but joy, and heartwarming messages for the whole family to talk about. Finally Christopher Robin learns to be a good person, and father to his child. So overall I would say that Christopher Robin is for kids, and up who are seeking some Winnie the Pooh fun for everyone to enjoy.

"Teen Titans Go! To the Movies" is a So-So Diversion for the Kids

So What’s The Story?

Hi, this is Keaton Marcus from Sweet and Sour Movie Reviews and today I will be reviewing DC’s latest installment and kids TV adaptation Teen Titans Go! To the Movies. When superhero director Jade Smith rejects the Teen Titans for having their own film unless they have a true arch-nemesis, the gang finds Splade (Will Arnett) who builds a Doomsday Device to hypnotize all of the other superheroes the Titans must become real superheroes to save the day in order to complete their very own movie.

How Was The Cast?

Teen-Titans-GO-To-The-Movies-Teaser-Poster.jpg

Bringing back the same cast was obviously bold, but worked in almost every way starting with actor Scott Menville as Robin, Tara Strong as Raven, Hynden Walch as Starfire, Khary Payton as Cyborg, Greg Cipes as Beast Boy and Will Arnett as Slade the new arrivaled villain. First and foremost like I said was Scott Menville known for Tangled, Teen Titans Go!, Wreck-It Ralph, Despicable Me, Chicken Little etc. as the wannabe superhero Robin. Although Menville is neither as funny nor creative as the actor was in the wonderfully hysterical TV show, he has more than enough of ridiculousness, lot’s of above-average animated experience and despite the shortage Menville was charming as ever along with the film’s colorful characters and silly action sequences. Secondly we saw Tara Strong known for My Little Pony: The Movie, Ice Age, Batman: The Killing Joke etc. as the over-serious dark witch Raven. However also not as alarming as the TV show, this happens to be one of the better performances of her career and though not with many lines as should be, she is funny and overall amidst the eye-popping animation, gags and fart jokes stands out as one of the cleverest characters in the “franchise” and while this film is not nearly good it is a start for the actress. Thirdly also returning from the beloved TV show is actress Hynden Walch known for Tangled, Groundhog Day, Jerry Maguire, Drillbit Taylor etc. as the alien princess Starfire. Unlike the rest of the cast Walch has barely enough animated experience to convey such a character, but with her previous live-action talents and an immensely funny sense of humour Walch surprises me once again with a wonderfully uplifting performance all the way from hugging kitties to shooting her colorful lasers out of her eyes I am looking forward to seeing her in further films coming up. Fourthly we have actor Khary Payton known for Teen Titans Go!, Latter Days etc. as Cyborg. With barely enough real films to make a big difference Payton might not be much of an endorsement to the general audience, but to the die hard fans (like me) the people will laugh-out-loud till the 93-minute flick is over whether it is Back to the Future references or waffles this is an enormous spark for the actor’s career even if it is far from stellar. Fifthly completing the Teen Titans is actor Greg Cipes known for Teen Titans Go!, Fast and Furious etc. as the joker and complete goofball Beast Boy. With nothing but the original TV show to leverage some talent you can barely call Cipes’ performance actually clever or anything, but for the younger ones Beast Boy is the most “amazing” character in the Teen Titans Go! Universe with slapstick and colorful gags galore. Lastly a new addition to the “franchise” was actor Will Arnett known for The Lego Movie, The Lego Batman Movie, The Nut Job, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Despicable Me etc. as the villain Slade. With an overload of kiddy experience and former comedic strengths, Arnett largely succeeds on every level giving not only the funniest, but the best DC villain the inter-connected franchise has done in a long time with wit and a fresh new start to a long running TV show.

Is It Worth Your While?

download-1.jpg

Returning from directing the 5-season TV show were first time filmmakers Peter Rida Michail and Aaron Horvath. Like most of the cast, these two directors may not have experience, but the filmmaking was still so-so and although with luke worm animation and a simple plot and storyline; Its entertainment to younger audiences, colorful characters, usually funny gags and a distinct sense of fun, Teen Titans will never compare with other great animated kids flicks such as Toy Story, The Incredibles, Wall-E etc. but it settles for a nice, cheerful, uplifting romp. Special effects wise, there is not much to say here with one major flaw being the flabby animation and of course an ultra-small 10M production budget, but since we saw that same difficulty in the original Cartoon Network show, forgiving the visuals crew should be an order as the colorful jokes cover up the non-efforting work on visceral charge. As I have said many times before though, I was not at all convinced by the cleverness of the plot or storyline within the film making it strictly for the younger ones and adding up to the long list of fun but dumb flicks which may not be much of an endorsement considering what the film is.

Aging ‘The Titans’

x480-u1K.jpg

Crazier and more out-of-control than a normal animated flick Teen Titans might not be for the youngest of kids, but as the children reach about a 7+ age range this animated romp becomes a walk in the park with silly, colorful action sequences including many comedic weapons, some use of guns, metal staff and sword fights and just a sense of chaotic mayhem washing down the movie. Language wise, there is really nothing but rude humour including dang and darn, insults include morons, losers, lame, dum dums, fool, stupid and “just a sidekick”, plus many toilet jokes including fart, poop, diarrhea and booty. Sexuality wise in one scene a prank caller pretends to be Lois Lane while calling Superman using the words smoochy smoochy and Robin is shirtless in one brief scene.

So What’s The Story?

Robin longs for a movie about him thinking that it’s the only way for him to be seen as a real hero. Soon he realizes that for him to have a movie he needs an arch nemesis. Later the Titans meet slade, a villain with the desire to control everybody’s mind, but luckily the Teen Titans are here to save the day.

Is It Worth Your While?

images.jpeg

Teen Titans Go to the Movies is many things, but incredible is not one of them, now here are my reasons. First of all the directing. I thought that the directors directed it in a fun, but ridiculous way. They managed to add many great jokes into the movie, and even some of the fun that the show had. That did not stop it from having a ridiculous, and over crazy plot that made me confused on what the film’s focus was for the plot. Next the TV show had mostly great episodes with a simple well structured plot with an overall lemonradar of 83% SWEET. The movie on the other hand did not have this so I am tempted to say that it should have stayed a TV show, but the laughs, and pure fun make it almost as entertaining, and well made as the show. Overall I thought that Teen Titans Go to the Movies was very funny, and happy, but had a ridiculous, and messy plot.

How Was the Cast

I thought that the voice cast for Teen Titans Go to the Movies was good. First we have Scott Menville as Robin. He also played Robin in the show, and he always gets the voice, and humour just right enough to keep the movie going. Next we have Will Arnett as Slade. He has a great character, and he played that character right. I thought that his voice was humorous, deep, and perfect for the job of playing the villain. Third we have Greg Cipes as Beast boy. He also played Beast Boy in the show, and every time he does it he gets the potty humour jokes right. Through the movie he was one of the many characters that made me laugh really hard, and especially in the show. Fourth we have Khary Payton as Cyborg. Also in the show Khary did a pretty good job. Except for the fact that his character (Cyborg) did not have as much chemistry with Greg’s character (Beast Boy) for jokes, but in the show they are basically the funniest couple together throughout the episodes, and I wanted more of that in this. Fifth we have Tara Strong as Raven. She has had tons of experience in TV show’s including My Little Pony, and Raven in the show. In the movie she is not a huge character, but she’s able to add a few laughs in there somewhere. Lastly we have Hynden Walch as Starfire. She also has had a career in TV shows such as Adventure Time, and Starfire in the show of this. Now she has very few lines, but her character seems to light up a child’s day with her smile, and that’s all that matters.

Aging ‘The Titans’

I gave this film 7+ mostly because of mild violence. There is punching, and kicking. Guns are involved as well as lasers. People are threatened or hurt badly, and there is some potty humour, but overall Teen Titans Go to the Movies is ridiculous, and funny perfect for kids, and older ages seeking a little bit of childish fun.

"Fallout" is Full of Great Action, Beautiful Set-Pieces, and Loads of Fun

So What’s The Story?

Hi, this is Keaton Marcus and today I will be reviewing the newest installment to the Mission: Impossible franchise, Fallout. After a mission gone wrong, Solomon Lane (Sean Harris) and his so-called 12 apostles have their hands on three plutonium bombs that are programmed to destroy ⅓ of the world’s population, Ethan (Tom Cruise), Benji (Simon Pegg), Luther (Ving Rhames) and Ilsa (Rebecca Ferguson) must retrieve and disarm the bombs before it is too late; However as Ethan’s good-intentions come back to haunt him while he becomes more and more of a fugitive the mission will become harder and harder to complete.

landscape-1531330001-mission-impossible-fallout-5.jpg

How Was The Cast?

The cast has been ever-changing within all the five films and with the sixth installment of Fallout the franchise does not stop this tradition. Although starring as the main character is the same old Tom Cruise known for Oblivion, Risky Business, Top Gun, The Mummy, American Made etc. performing the role of Ethan Hunt in now all six flicks in the franchise. With well-directed action sequences, a smart, clever plotline, a wonderful filmmaker at the helm and a dynamic_cast, Cruise at age 55 manages to do it once again in this high-octane action-fueled flick moving through brilliant set-pieces and insane stunts coming off of another amazing performance in true-story American Made helping to get off of the slump that 2017’s The Mummy created so deftly for him. But with another great job done for actor Tom Cruise, his fans are once again satisfied with his career. Secondly also returning from previous installments is actor Simon Pegg known for the Star Trek franchise, Ready Player One, The Boxtrolls etc. as the ever-so goofy hacker-type character Benji Dunn. With not many great films in the last few years, Pegg thrives in the new space he is given with a well-crafted film and cast behind him; As I said this is now the best flick that Simon Pegg was associated with giving laughs, chemistry and a new sense of pure adrenaline and fun to the amazing action movie. Thirdly returning from the last film, Rogue Nation however still new to the works is actress Rebecca Ferguson known for The Greatest Showman, Florence Foster Jenkins, Hercules etc. playing double-agent Ilsa Faust. Not in many big roles or action films for the matter, Ferguson improves on her performance in the last movie with a character that has bigger importance to the plot, more time to develop within the film (the 2hr 27min runtime) and overall proves once again that the actress is ready for anything while in character. Lastly again returning from Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation is actor Sean Harris known for Deliver Us from Evil, Macbeth, Prometheus etc. as the ruthless terrorist Solomon Lane. Continuing from his brilliant performance in the last film, Harris creates a new creepy, cold atmosphere within the cast making sure that he comes up as one of the top villains in action flicks, and in my opinion he would so be on the list; With a breathtaking script and character set-up amidst all the action sequences and plot twists Harris manages to keep his character alive long enough to last the entire film and hopefully I would like to see him return in future installments and just movies overall.

Is it Worth Your While?

The directors have also been ever-changing starting with Brian De Palma, secondly directing Mission: Impossible 2 was John Woo, Mission: Impossible 3 was sci-fi director J.J Abrams, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol was Brad Bird and finally rookie Christopher McQuarrie manages to create the brilliant Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation and the best in the franchise, Mission: Impossible - Fallout. McQuarrie makes a blend of story/plot, wonderful stunts, a high-mark for set-pieces, special effects and very well-directed undeniably fun action sequences to create one of the best action flicks of all time and most likely the best of the year. Although all of the Mission installments happen to be smooth, fun and slick, Fallout stands out from the crowd with more than just a summer popcorn film. Special effects wise, Fallout stands at a massive 178M production budget which happens to be the biggest of the franchise with Mission: Impossible (80M), Mission: Impossible 2 (125M), Mission: Impossible 3 (150M), Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (145M) and Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (150M). Although 178M may seem much too large for a pure action flick, Fallout uses the money wisely with a reasonably expensive cast, the best set-pieces in a long time and just purely awesome special effects in the grand city of Paris balancing the smarts and visceral beauty of the movie. Story and plot wise I have said this many times it different ways, but Fallout manages to be one of the rare summer blockbusters that gives both excitement and cleverness with a film that always gives the villain (Lane) something creative and new to do with another successful attempt at a fun plot comparing to other amazing summer action flicks that share the same prospect such as Inception, the Star Trek franchise, Minority Report, Die Hard etc. but still towering over most.

Aging ‘The 12 Apostles’

One of the most intense installments to the franchise, Fallout is like any common action flick. Violence wise there is many gun duels, explosions galore, insane stunts and a decent amount of blood in a bathroom fight scene however never exceeds PG-13 standards. Language wise there are uses of f….ing, s..t, hell, ass, damn, bitch and Jesus Christ while middle-finger gestures are also in play. Finally sexuality wise there is much less objectification of women than the Fast and Furious franchise in Mission: Impossible, Fallout does have a bathroom scene where under the stall it looks like multiple men who are doing stuff in there (comments), and one unexpected kiss making it mostly okay for Tweens.
