So What’s The Story?

Hi, this is Keaton Marcus from Sweet and Sour Movie Reviews and today I will be reviewing Marvel’s newest released sequel Ant-Man and the Wasp. After the events of Ant-Man, Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) is under house arrest with the suit still hidden within his home, Hope Van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly), Lang and Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) are still trying to find Hope’s “dead mother” within the Quantum Realm, but when a new villain arises known as Ghost who can move through matter, the three heroes must save their technology before it is too late.

How Was The Cast?

In this sequel to the much praised Ant-Man, Wasp adds many new cast members among the nostalgic original group that starred in Ant-Man. Once again returning as the main hero/goofball Ant-Man is ever-so-charming Paul Rudd, the over-serious partner Hope Van Dyne now known as the Wasp is again performed by actress Evangeline Lilly, while Michael Douglas again performs as the brilliant scientist Dr. Hank Pym and like I said within the returning cast was newby actress Hannah John-Kamen as the superpowered villain known as Ghost. As I have said returning as the cocky, sly hero Ant-Man is actor Paul Rudd known for Ant-Man, Anchorman, Knocked Up, Clueless etc. Rudd, who now was multiple experiences with Marvel flicks of many different standpoints plus individual comedy flicks puts a nice blend of funny and charming into a clearly amazing superhero film with a hilarious and smart script, more characters and a better story to relate to, in my opinion I would consider this to be one of his better performances of his popular career and easily within the Marvel Cinematic Universe while adding almost perfect chemistry with surrounding cast members Mr. Rudd lightly but surely entertains you the most in the entire span of the movie. Secondly there is daughter to Dr. Pym, Hope Van Dyne played by actress Evangeline Lilly (The Hurt Locker, Ant-Man, The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug, Real Steel etc. otherwise known as the Wasp (Ant-Man’s partner). With a bigger part than the original, more space to try bold new acting strategies and again very well done chemistry that we rarely see anymore in action flicks, Lilly succeeds just as much as the entire movie does. Thirdly another returning character was brilliant Dr. Hank Pym played by veteran star Michael Douglas known for The Game, Wall Street, Basic Instinct, Ant-Man etc. Adding much more experience and ultimately an amazing performance to the already wonderful movie was Douglas who was funnier, more of a part and had a way greater script than before the actor overall adds to the list of improving cast members with more than enough charisma and chemistry to work with for the film. Lastly was a fresh character and villain known as Ghost played by still-new actress Hannah John-Kamen known for Tomb Raider, Ready Player One etc. Although with very little previous acting experience, Kamen proves to be much creepier, cooler and overall better villain than most other Marvel “bad-guy” outings with pretty much awesome superpowers and a complex, heartfelt and smart backstory which you do not see in most modern villains.

Is It Worth Your While?

Directing this Marvel flick was the original filmmaker Peyton Reed known for Ant-Man, Herbie, The Yes Man etc. Reed has a small but varied career of pretty much all spectacular movies exploring different genres and ages which help deftly balance a perfect combo of action sequences, special effects, story, comedy and really the entire casts wildly good performances which helps Ant-Man and the Wasp not just stand out for a Marvel movie or Peyton Reed flick it steps out of the crowd for action films in general; That being said it might not be the best-directed Marvel flick ever, but surprisingly Wasp comes out as one of them for sure giving the genre more life than just about ever. Special effects wise, the original Ant-Man film did not spend nearly as much as other bigger Marvel films standing at a reasonable 130M, continuing this was Ant-Man and the Wasp standing at a bigger, but still doable 162M being the least for 2018’s Marvel, quality wise it looked a lot better than other bigger budgeted action flicks with varied creative usage breaking off from the original flick. Storyline wise, it came out much better than most other Marvel movies with more focus, balance and a fun cast to elevate the smart story and plot almost evolving in brains for Marvel and carrying on the sort of comedic tradition the Cinematic Universe has been playing at for years now blending this film with comedy and action giving it just as much strength as other flicks of the same franchise and genre.

Aging Pym-Tech

With a much lighter, funnier concept than the last installments including Avengers: Infinity War, Ant-Man and the Wasp is much more appropriate than most other Marvel flicks but still with tons of fun action sequences, hand-to-hand combat, there are some intense flashbacks including a little girl with dead parents and while guns and other weapons are shown they are rarely used, like the original film there is common language such as s..t, badass, ass, goddammit, bull s..t, son of a bitch and insults include jerk, hate and idiot but are mostly okay for older kids and sexuality wise like most Marvel flicks there are many scenes with flirting (longing looks) and a couple kisses but again does not exceed PG-13 levels at all on any circumstance.
